Silly car question

Is it possible that a bad fuse can cause a window motor to fail? Or do I need to ask Santa for a new motor?

1. Short answer is yes, it's possible.

Did it fail suddenly? or was it working intermitently before it failed?

4. Sudden.

Had it partially down while driving, it wouldn't go back up. Turned the car off to retrieve stuff from the back, turned it back on just to check, and the window went up. Given the season, I'm not wild about the idea of covering the open space with plastic, so I'm not even trying the window.

Try tugging it up a bit then switching it on, or tugging up a bit while it is on, if it happens again.

Any way, you proved it is not a fuse. Fuses are not intermittent. Either they transmit power in the circuit or they are blown and will never transmit power ever again.

5. Usually not a fuse for each single device

Usually it is multiple window motors on one fuse or all the devices for one door on one fuse. One device per fuse would be too many wires, making the wiring harness too heavy and too expensive.

But it is easy to check fuses. Put a fresh one in or swap two and see what changes.

You can also visually inspect the fuse to see if the fuse wire is gapped inside the fuse.

I had a '66 VW bug that had me baffled for awhile because it had a separate fuse for each headlight.

8. From your description, I would suspect the finger switch on the arm rest.

Voice of experience on mine. It is a module of several switches.

Easy to replace. Only need a butter knife.

I ordered a new one on ebay or Amazon. I forget which.

16. It was the switch on my wife's Dodge Caravan.

Ordered one on the internet and replaced it myself. Hope that's all it is on yours.

18. You can test the switch before ordering a replacement

Usually the bank of switches pop out. Each switch has its own plug. Swap the plugs between the suspect switch and a known working one.

To avoid having your window stuck in the down position, don't try to run it down with the known working switch. Instead, try to use the suspect switch to move a known working window down and up.

because I'm too chicken to see if it works, winter in Colorado and all. It is, of course, the driver's window. And my reliable mechanic packed up and moved to Utah so they could be closer to grandkids. So I'm really hoping it's something an old lady can fix with a screwdriver. ...sigh...

I also searched this: window stuck on 2001 caravan And found a ton of stuff including Youtube videos showing how to fix a window. Procedures to determine what the cause is, etc.

The biggest thing about opening the door to get inside of it is having the confidence to do it by the book and do it slowly but confidently.

I paid more than 200 to have a new motor put in. Need the driver window, but had the mechanic lock the passenger door in the up position.

I had the window just fall down from closing the door at least twice. That would be a tragedy in Colorado in the winter..
