The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsAs you can see, I have returned to DU after a brief absence...
something -- I don't know what -- happened but alluva sudden I was not recognized as a member of DU. I've been a star member for 19 years with the same name so what happened?
I didn't realize how awful it was not to be able to post threads and reply to other members threads. It didn't feel good.
Fortunately, I have a computer whiz (who is helping me with my self published book in terms of layout and design). It's a joint effort of an old lady and a young computer guy. It kinda works out fine: I get his technical expertise and he gets free art history lessons. And he is learning how to appreciate a beautiful thing in life, even if you don't particularly want to go to museums like I do. It was great to hear him say "Wow, that's beautiful!" when he was dealing with an essay I had done on Titian. He was helping me obtain photos of the works that had a requisite number of pixels to publish without blurring. (I was careful to use those that were under "fair use" in reproduction).
Anyway, happy to be back functioning here at DU!

(64,645 posts)moonlighting and was looking for a "resume builder." He charges per hour very reasonably and is loving getting credit for doing something related to books, and especially something esoteric like art. I kinda like this kind of "mentoring." I have granddaughters his age so I can see how growing up comfortable with all the new technology, but sometimes at the expense of all the more esoteric stuff such as art history, can deprive yourself of the marvelous experience of reading about/experiencing first hand can be a new thrill in your young life.

(64,645 posts)I have hired a person to help me out. He is in the tech support office at a local college and moonlights his work with me. If I didn't have him I would be in the same predicament you are in.

(64,645 posts)Mail. It's been in my mind and then in the works for a long time and I had to make a major revision due to copyright issues and some problems with the reproduction of images that don't have at least 300 pixels strength. I almost gave up when I got sick but I decided not to. I'm old and this is my legacy to my grandkids.
I am sure I'm not the first author to have serious problems, doubt and illness that interrupt a book getting published.

(35,048 posts)I'm not a computer whiz but sometimes I've had passwords get corrupted or disappeared at an inconvenient time. Now I save my user names and passwords in a separate text file - "just in case." I know that my browser (Chrome) saves them too, but I never know when something might go wrong.

(12,794 posts)Art history is not so much a discipline as a treat. I remember when I got my big art history book for a course in college and I spent hours poring over it. What a delicious extravagance to have the most beautiful images in history at your fingertips! Your computer whiz friend will be looking at the world in a new way and he may not realize how much it will expand his mind.
