He is just perfect for Pete Townshend's writing. Pete wrote from a hardscrabble point, but didn't really live it. Roger, on the other hand, often said if not for The Who, he'd still be working at a sheet metal factory.

(14,912 posts)She gets annoyed. I say, "Listen! It's Love Reign O'er Me!!". She stops to listen and gasped, too!
Between two WN shows, and about another 7 shows untill '82 we -never-heard LROM once!
Now we would! Thrilling! 🎤🎵🎶🎸🧡

Happy Birthday, Roger! 🎂👍🧡
The Who is one of my two top favorite bands. Seen them first in the last of their flower power pop stage performance in early '68. From Tommy through Quad the '76 & '79 tours, their near last '82 show, the '89 return.
Missed the '00s tours.
While I couldn't afford to see them in '15 - I took a bus across Queens to find to my delight a little park by Forrest Hills Tennis Stadium (where they played WN '71) where I could hear them live, and actually have a seat! It was hot that day, and night.
One cool thing was walking towards the stadium at night by these residental apartment buildings and hearing The Who playing; their music wafting high in the air over the rooftops.
Roger is such a powerhouse of a singer: roaring, exultant, angry, just so strong yet able to be nimble in his voice following some of Pete's more complex vocal changes - "Helpless Dancer"(Quad), and "Getting in Tune"(WN), for instance.
The power of Love Reign O'er Me! Got to hear it twice live '82, and '15. In '15 he was still just as strong. Amazing!
Even '19 where he did have one bad note at our show for that song - he nailed it at others.
But he also can evoke yearning, and sweetness often less heard. Obviously "See Me, Feel Me".
But the lesser known the *lynch pin* song of Lifehouse (which was a Rock SF epic "collapsed" into Who's Next, and didn't appear on the original vinyl but later on the double CD) ~ "Pure and Easy" - the lyrics "the note is eternal, I hear it, it sees me forever we....". Well, his intonation on "forever" is so full yearning, and a kind of sweetness. Amazing. The rest of the song is powerful, and at one point raw. Works fabulously!

(15,334 posts)The emotion and phrasing
"Now I'm here with you little darling,
And you say, 'You're beautiful as you are'
And I've managed somehow to survive
You arrived in my life like a fragrance
You helped me find a way to laugh
Now I know where my so-called beauty lies
God gave him a face
Then he gave me something above
God gave me a grace
Then he gave me your sweet, sweet, sweet love"
The great singers make you feel something, and that's what Roger Daltrey does.

(15,334 posts)One thing that worked so well for The Who was the power of Rogers voice, interspersed with the vulnerable, plaintive voice of Pete Townshend, like on the songs Baba O'Riely, Bargain, and this one
