(633 posts)You've actually learned a little bit of it, just by interacting with other people.
When a friend calls you on the phone or says something to you in a different room, you recognize their voice.
You don't have to guess who it is, you know them by the sound (overtones) of their voice. Your brain recognizes
the musical language.
99.99 percent of sound is not pure. It's compose of overtones.
When you hear a voice, instrument, noise, you're hearing several notes at a time.
Here's a recipe> Take a cup of C note, add a 1/10 of an E note, a 1/15th of an A note, a 1/23rd of a D note...etc...
mix well, it's the voice of Taylor Swift!
OK..that's a very simplistic thought but, not too weird. That's why you recognize everyday sounds.
You already know some of ..ah..Music..in a way..
Again, a person CAN learn the language of music.
You just need a good teacher to "Get-what's-going-on !

LOL. Maybe it's true?

(633 posts)..eventually, you pretty much know what's in a song at it's "Structure" even before the first verse is over.
Kinda like "I'm going to climb a....." You KNOW it's probably a ladder or stairs or mountain or..a VERY few things.
Not much guessing there!

(115,735 posts)The older I get, the more I realize how little I know.
For starters, there's electricity. I know the theory, I even know about Ohm's Law and the difference between amperage and voltage, but I don't really understand how it works, like where do the electrons actually go? I suspect it's a form of magic.
Also water. Why do we need it? And how can two gases combine to become a liquid anyhow?
And what is dirt, and why does it keep appearing in my house for no obvious reason?
And how can a cat shed so much and still be covered with fur? My cat should be bald because all of her fur is in clumps in corners but she's as furry as ever.

(2,843 posts)Always loved music and know a lot about it but never took up an instrument.
I always had friends that played guitar but it was hard for me to follow because I'm a lefty. I know that didn't stop Jimi Hendrix or Paul McCartney.

(1,745 posts)My mother's family had some truly amazing cooks and bakers. Wished I'd ask them to teach me. My Mom was good at cooking some things, but didn't enjoy the process, so she never really taught me. My sister is a really good cook, but we don't have a lot of the family recipes.
Also I'd love to find out more of my grandparents history, as I never got to meet either of my grandfathers. I have never even seen a picture of my Dad's father. Also lost both my grandmothers early, my dad's mom when I was five, and my Mom's when I was 10.
Also I would love to learn more about Ireland and Italy where both sides originated, and to that end the Celtic and Italian languages.

(7,627 posts)I'm attempting to declutter and organize my stuff. The only thing I'm getting done is shifting my clutter around.
One of my items that I'm trying to openly display is my blanket collection. I tried the roll the blankets up look and display them in a outdoor flower planter that I have. The blankets didn't fit in it. I then took the rolled up blankets and placed them on this vintage ratten foot stool/ plant stand that I have and there isn't enough room for the blankets. I don't want to purchase more items to store them and I don't want to store them in plastic under the bed storage totes.
It's maddening since I clean for other people and one of my cleaning jobs right now is decluttering and organizing their stuff. I've made nice progress for them and they're super happy with the results.
Why can't I do the same for myself?
I'm also currently working on old bed sheets and comforters that I've washed, dried and folded. These will be going to a pet rescue so it's not like I haven't been making any progress for myself. I just feel stuck and frustrated.
