(146,288 posts)1. A long time ago, I worked in a gas company office.
Someone accidentally dropped a 1 oz. bottle of Ethyl Mercaptan, the smelly stuff used to add odor to natural gas. It broke. It emptied the building for the rest of the day. In the parts per million concentration, it's fine, and lets people know there's a gas leak. An ounce of it evaporating in a building is a crisis.

But you spray it on fabric or carpets. It's disgustingly sweet.
