The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsOur sweet girl Crystal crossed the Rainbow Bridge this afternoon.
She was almost 18, and was rescued 15 years ago. She was unable to walk, and her eyes were going. She adored her hoomans, her cousin dogs that would come and stay with her, and was as gentle as a lamb with kids.
She's with her big sister Daisy now, chasing her around and letting her win all the rasslin matches. Goodbye, little one.

You never realize how much you will miss a beloved pet until they are in their last days. I could barely function after we put our 17 year old girl (cat) on her trip. This was just about a year ago, and I still miss her.

So she had a long and happy life, with one of our dearest DU members. That's the way it's supposed to work, but dang, that's hard. Crystal was clearly a cool cat.
Editing, thanks to niyad; Crystal would surely not like to be referred to as a cat, even a cool one. My apologies for the senior moment .

(12,950 posts)The thing I missed the most when our dogs departed this earth was the sound of their paws clicking on the hardwood floors as they lived their doggy lives. It was a constant reminder of how much a part of our family they were. I didn't know Crystal, but it sounds like she found the best forever home ever. The image of her playing with Daisy has warmed my heart. Rest in peace, Crystal.

Epitaph to a Dog
George Gordon Byron
1788 1824
When some proud Son of Man returns to Earth,
Unknown to Glory but upheld by Birth,
The sculptor's art exhausts the pomp of woe,
And storied urns record who rests below.
When all is done, upon the Tomb is seen
Not what he was, but what he should have been.
But the poor Dog, in life the firmest friend,
The first to welcome, foremost to defend,
Whose honest heart is still his Masters own,
Who labours, fights, lives, breathes for him alone,
Unhonour'd falls, unnotic'd all his worth,
Deny'd in heaven the Soul he held on earth.
While man, vain insect! hopes to be forgiven,
And claims himself a sole exclusive heaven.
Oh man! thou feeble tenant of an hour,
Debas'd by slavery, or corrupt by power,
Who knows thee well, must quit thee with disgust,
Degraded mass of animated dust!
Thy love is lust, thy friendship all a cheat,
Thy tongue hypocrisy, thy heart deceit,
By nature vile, ennobled but by name,
Each kindred brute might bid thee blush for shame.
Ye! who behold perchance this simple urn,
Pass on, it honours none you wish to mourn.
To mark a friend's remains these stones arise;
I never knew but one and here he lies.

I often wonder if Im going to reconnect with all the fur babies Ive known, loved, and lost. Wasnt it Will Rogers who wondered if dogs went to Heaven? And then he said if not, then he wanted to go where they are.

(50 posts)He was a famous critter lover and had both a poet's heart and a way with words.
I have often found a catharsis by reading his words at times like this...
The Power of the Dog
Rudyard Kipling -- 1912
There is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and Sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.
Buy a pup and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie
Perfect passion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart for a dog to tear.
When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vets unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will findits your own affair
But
youve given your heart to a dog to tear.
When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!).
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gonewherever it goesfor good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear.
Weve sorrow enough in the natural way,
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent.
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer weve kept em, the more do we grieve:
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-time loan is as bad as a long
So why inHeaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?

(10,882 posts)I will find myself in high summer grass.
The humming shock of the golden light.
And I will hear them before I see them
and know right away who is bounding across the field to meet me.
All my good dogs will come then, their wet noses bumping against my palms,
their hot panting, their rough, faithful tongues.
Their eyes young and shiny again.
The dense scruff of their fur,
The unspeakable softness of their bellies,
their velvet ears against my cheeks.
I will bend to them, my face covered with their kisses,
My hands full of them.
In the grass I will let them knock me down.

The pain of loss is so deep because they brought us such joy. And that joy will always live within us.
