Ever deal with an uber-nerd?

A guy I know called me, and we were talking about videogames.

Now this guy is the ultimate nerd.
Trekkie, Star Wars geek, you name it.

Years ago when they first announced they were going to make a Lord Of The Rings set of movies, the guy reacted like fundys do when someone insults their faith.
He threw a fit.
I doubt he's ever seen any of the movies.

So tonight I mentioned the Lego "Lord Of The Rings" videogame I'm planning to buy, and he threw ANOTHER fit.

According to the guy, it's not bad enough they blaspheme (and that's the word he used) Star Wars by having Lego sets and videogames, now they are blaspheming (again, his exact word) Tolkien.

Best I could do was just say "Lighten up."

Anyone else know a guy or girl that bad?

1. One of my best friends in highschool was an UBERnerd. Ron had black greasy hair...

We were 15 years old. This was long before computers, so Ron was an electronics geek.
He might have had the coolest "hobby" of any nerd EVER. He bought old Triumph sports
cars, refurbished them, and sold them at a pretty hefty profit. At 15!!!

What made his cars so special would be the James Bond-like toggle switch board he
would install. There might be 8-12 sound system speakers in those little Triumph
cockpits. If someone was tailgating you, you could flip a switch and your brakelights
would come on without touching your brakes. If you were speeding and saw a cop,
you could flip another switch and hit the brakes without your brakelights coming on.
Etc. etc,

I lost track of Ron after highschool, but I've always assumed that, like a stereotypical
ubernerd, he went on to a very successful and lucrative career of some sort.

He was extremely socially awkward, but he was an extremely nice guy with a wide
range of serious talents and abilities.

Then she married one one and is now pregnant. Thank God I no longer work with her. It would be torture. Guild this and war this and whatever......to each his/her own but shut the heck up at work please. 95 percent of us just don't care!

5. Yep, I have a brother in law like that.

The guy is a walking geek stereotype, right down to the fact that he's 33 years old and REALLY DOES live in his mothers basement.

He has every major armor upgrade in World of Warcraft memorized, and can tell you exactly what the impact on an item or armor swap will be on your DPS or healing abilities. Ages ago, when I played WoW, he was constantly screaming (literally) about how "wrong" my characters were. My standard response was "Whatever, I like it and I'm just having fun"...and he'd look at me like I was the idiot.

He called the LOTR movies a "bastardization" of the stories, refuses to watch the Game of Thrones show on HBO because (his words): "it was so wrong it made me cry", considers "Archer was the best captain" to be "fighting words" (and will actually start a physical fight over them), and can drone on for an hour about the relative technological capabilities of the Star Wars vs Star Trek universes (do NOT get him started on which would win in an inter-series war).

For some bizarre reason, he hasn't had a romantic relationship since high school, can't hold a job to save his life, and spends much of his non-basement time hanging out with people half his age playing Pokemon. Yep, he's going places in life...

I've wondered whether he has Aspergers, as he does seem like a stereotypical Aspergers case in some regards, but my wife minored in Child Development while working on her M.E. degree and says that if he's ASD, then it's just barely. She attributes most of his behavior to laziness and a mother who is so terrified of living alone that she's allowed him to live a life with no real expectations. He geeks out because he can.

My wife and I have already had several discussions about his future after my mother-in-law passes away (probably in this coming decade, given her health issues). It's a hell of a conundrum, as we don't make enough money to support him, he drives us both insane so moving into our house is NOT an option, and yet we don't want to see him become homeless. I have no idea what's going to happen to the guy when my mother in law isn't around to support him any longer.

7. Yeah. Many of the sports fans I work with

Absolutely insufferable.

No, they don't live at home with their parents or fit whatever nerd gamer appearance stereotype society might conjure up. They are forever every bit as intense and fanatical about their favorite teams or players and indeed seem to expend most talk on "off field" matters of incredible minutia and take any push back whatsoever to be an insult. Conversely, all those types seem equally dis-interested in anything else but sports.

10. There are science nerds and sci-fi nerds. They are different.

MFM's friend "Ron" is an electronics/science nerd.

These other people that are obsessed with sci-fi and video games are not the same.

I've always hung out with science nerds. Math, electronics , engineering, physics types.
There's my avatar the astrophysicist. These guys have absolutely no interest in sports, so I find that a good thing..... I don't care about sci-fi/fantasy.
