I thought this was interesting -- the dietician at my weight loss group challenged each of us to commit to doing something to improve our Thanksgiving Day traditions in some way that makes it healthier.
The average American gains 3 pounds over the Thanksgiving weekend. Part is just fluid retention, but some is fat.
The challenge could be big or small. Something as simple as eating a half a slice of pumpkin pie, or as "big" as you want it to be.
I committed to taking a 30 mile bike ride on Thanksgiving morning before I have cook the family dinner for our evening get-together.
Anyone care to join me in committing to one healthy change to your T-day traditions?

(39,343 posts)...because with the medicine I'm on, it could make me super sick.
Does that still count as a Health Challenge?
Pie? screw that, I'm gonna kill some pies.

(26,109 posts)I ate slow, and concentrated on conversation. Treated the sweet potato casserole as my dessert. Started walking again today for the first time in a long time.

(22,845 posts)There's all that chopping, stirring, mashing, basting, pouring, stuffing, slicing, bending over repeatedly to put things in the oven or take them out. It's a workout. I am totally exhausted afterward.

(23,272 posts)I give all of my employees the day off so I do ALL the farmwork/chores myself that day - that's a lot of exercise with 40 horses to take care of.
I haven't had dessert in 20 years... seriously, I haven't or I'd be a blimp by now (I gain weight very, very easily) so I have no plans to have any dessert on Thanksgiving - I am way over those cravings.
I'm not giving up my after dinner glass of wine - its my reward for a looooonnnnngggg day of cooking and work.....
I dunno.
But good on ya for the bike ride. That's a LOT of cycling....

(41,960 posts)It won't be perfect; I do love cornbread dressing and God knows the meal has ten times the fat we usually have, but that just means we do pretty well otherwise. I'm trying to use as little butter as humanly possible.
And fortunately I have two single sons who'll take home leftovers!
