Now, you can do much of your business online.
.
I have had to go there 3 or 4 times in the last 10 years and, perhaps BECAUSE of the
online access, they have really gotten their shit together. What used to be a 2, 3 or
more-hour visit had become about a 15-min wait.
.
They've done something really, really right.

(72,300 posts)Today I needed to turn in a set of license plates and file a change of address for everything.
The information guy in the lobby was great. The lady at the window [img][/img] not so much. [img][/img]
I have to go back on Monday. This time I'll drive a little bit farther to the next county north of us. It's much more peaceful there. I've got to wade through this but it's a bigger pain in the tush than I could deal with today.

(108 posts)But our plates and license expire on our birthday. So as I say each year my birthday present is standing in a long line, dealing with a crabby worker, and then paying $150 bucks to renew my plates. And heaven forbid if you don't have some sort of paperwork that you don't know about....ahhh I feel your pain.

(72,300 posts)You need a better birthday than hanging out at the DMV.
Oh and by the way [img][/img] to DU, Lokey.
Thanks for the welcome
I can renew my plates by mail and online well ahead of time...but I am a procrastinator especially when it comes to 150 bucks lol..yes my own fault. I have tried it before and it takes so long to get the tags in the mail. I worry a little about not having them on time. Ah well, I can celebrate my b-day with all the folks in line because I assume most of us waited until then to get them. This year I totally forgot about it until someone at work gave me a card and my first thought was ah crap I hope I have the money to get tags

(3,521 posts)I went to the DMV in Milwaukee. I was in and out, new DL in hand, in about 20 minutes. It doesn't have to be a nightmare.
In_The_Wind
(72,300 posts)Today really was a nightmare!
I'll work it out next week at a DMV that I know is user friendly.

(3,521 posts)Once upon a time I lived in Massachusetts. Getting anything done at the motor vehicle registry was a horror show. In Wisconsin things usually work a lot more efficiently.

(9,527 posts)The first day was spent arguing with the state trooper in charge of the DMV location, but was seemingly incapable of reading the state rules on motorcycle licenses for kids. So we go back the next day and spent several hours in line only for a bomb threat to close the location for the day. The third day, we still had to wait for a while, but I was eventually able to get my license over the protest of the state trooper.
Sadly that sort of thing has become very common when I have to go to a government agency. Try getting a passport as a guy who's changed his last name. It's like nobody has ever heard of that before. Or due to the skin on my fingers periodically molting, I couldn't get finger prints registered and so I couldn't get a driver's license. Or the time I once had my license suspended due to two wrecks in a year's time as a minor, took the paper work in to the DMV who couldn't find any record of my license being suspended.

(72,300 posts)I had two vanity plates that were spelled almost the same.
I wanted to park one with the DMV until I could transfer it to a different car.
The other one was on a trike that I haven't ridden in two years.
The DMV lady actually had trouble recognizing the difference. [img][/img]
Anytime I've bought an auto out of state and tried to register it here, I've had grief.
I'm happy that I've never had a problem with my license.

(41,694 posts)1st Try: I tried to do it online and was tiold I have to do it in person.
2nd Try: I show up with old license and insurance papers in hand. Was told and I quote "My citizenship status was in question"
My reply "This is a DRIVER's License, not a citizenship license"
Was told I had to get all necessary papers and come back.
3rd Try: I show up my birth certificate from Austria, the notarized English translation thereof, My State Department form DS-1530 Certification of Birth-which proves I'm an American citizen by birth. My DD-214 and other papers
They hem and haw, call in a stuporvisor, who calls in a second stuporvisor and finally agree to give me my license.
I told them I served in the US Air Force and held a Top Secret clearance and wasn't asked all this crap. They asked how did I get my license without providing all this before. I told them that in 1974 when I got my first TX license none of this was asked for, they took my old OH license and that was good enough for them at the time.
Then I flunked the eye test because of the diabetic retinal damage to my right eye.
4th Try. Show up with new glasses and doctor's form saying my right eye will not get better. Finally got my license and people ask why I have such a scowl on the photo.

(873 posts)When your number came up on the big board?
Or is the big board just a Wisconsin thing?
What happens is you enter what you need taken care of and you are issued a "deli style" ticket. Then you watch the big board for your number. ......and wait......and wait.....
In_The_Wind
(72,300 posts)It's so much easier than waiting in line.
At least the DMV location I hate has provided bench seats for the long wait.
The smaller one I'll be finishing up with next week is the old style wait in line. I should have gone there first. I'm sure I would have needed to return again but it wouldn't have been as aggravating.

(731 posts)Another DMV goon approached me from the driver's side while I was waiting for inspection. With ten fingers wagging backward the idiot urged me to move into the left lane, already full.
I told the goon my wheels don't turn 45 degrees, let alone 90.

Mine was a '73 vintage.
I don't need to go to a state run inspection center here. [img][/img]
The local shops are certified to do it.
