The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI've been using red light bulb therapy to get the best sleep. Seems
to be working. I read or watch a video while the lamp beside me has red light waves that encourages melatonin instead of the white light (which includes blue waves that say "wake up" . I fall asleep faster. I have a deeper sleep. I feel more relaxed.

(72,300 posts)I always preferred red or orange in my bedroom. I wake up almost instantly when the power goes out. Yep. I sleep better with a warm glow somewhere in my room.
I also have a red light in the the hallway. Green in the living room. Pink or orange in the dining room.
My neighbors must think I'm nuts.
I'm not. I have always lived with cats and dogs. Let me tell you there is nothing like tripping over a golden retriever or a chocolate lab when you're half asleep.

(14,627 posts)on red light therapy since reading your post, but can't find anything very helpful.
Is there a particular system you use or will any red bulb work?
How long do you leave it on?
Thanks! - FDL

Melatonin and cancer... don't miss it. Record it if you can't watch it. Heard an interview this AM and immediately Googled "melatonin cancer" and the research is fascinating! This may be the breast and prostate cancer, ahhhh, 'cure' is a poor word to use but lack of melatonin may be a significant contributor and it may factor in prevention and treatment.
Essentially, artificial light and lack of sleep in conditions without such or limited to certain types of light may preclude natural melatonin production thereby decreasing the body's ability to fight cancer. So, use a red nightlight in the washroom, get rid of your radio alarm clock with other than red lights, draw your shades to eliminate street lighting from your bedroom and others. Melatonin production begins about 90 minutes after the abscence of light...the interview was fascinating and I shall not miss The Nature of Things on CBC this evening."

(118,696 posts)I just asked for a red non christmas bulb to help one sleep at the hardware store and she took me right to an led red bulb.
Here is some information on melatonin:

It has only been two nights and maybe it is the placebo effect I am feeling. But it makes sense.

(118,696 posts)the hardware store clerk for the red bulbs. She showed me an old fashioned incandescent red bulb which was 25 Watts. I said no. She showed me an red CFL bulb that was 60 Watts. I can just read by it. Just.

(29,414 posts)though it's a yellow light. It can get pretty bright for a 1/4 watt (sorry, they're 15 watt), so I set it to a low glow. The salt ions are supposed to help make breathing easier (for those of us that have such problems)
My Persian salt lamp isn't pink like those pictured, but they do have other shades in the red spectrum. I wonder if they'd help the same way?

(118,696 posts)at dawn the sky is very blue: night light vs. dawn light. And of course white light of your bulbs contains every color of the rainbow. Even a red scarf over your lamp would work I think (but that would be a fire hazzard). I'm thinking of getting a red plastic filter for my computer screen if this continues to work.

(29,414 posts)try an old darkroom photographic red lamp. If you can't find one, I may still have mine. As I don't do oldstyle photo printing any longer, I have no need for it. I am not sure of the exact color, but it's a deep red. If it's too bright you could also put it on a dimmer
