A glimpse into a drunkard's soul

Going through some old, freshly rediscovered papers tonight, I found a couple old poems I wrote many years ago, during the times I was an active alcoholic.

Those were lonely, painful times, but they were also the times I wrote some of my best poetry, some of which actually got published. I created more than one poem that explored the sadness in my booze-fried mind. Most of them regrettably don't exist any more, but some do.

I thought some here might appreciate a glimpse into a sad young man's soul. I acknowledge the fact that this may not be world class free verse, but it is at least honest and sincere.

Enjoy it. I have another one I may post later.

Blood Upon The Rose

There is a shadow in the night
that blends in with the patterns
of trembling leaves upon the rusty wall--
the shadow that is cast down
by the lonely midnight moon.
It stabs my soul like thorns
upon the deep red rose in darkness;
passed silently it is unseen, but touched
it bites and seeks to taste the blood
that is the color of the petals
from the flower that hides within the night.
Stirred by the midnight breeze it falls
softly, noiselessly, beyond my sight,
its thirst now quenched,
to be forgotten as the dancing clouds
obscure the laughing moon.

Beautiful. Your stylistic discription is nicely layered; just like the way a rose is wound. Joe Shlabotnik Jan 2012 #3

And enjoy it I did.

It is always fascinating to read what others have to say about themselves when they were burdened with alcoholism, or some other such addiction.

This is a lovely work. Very atmospheric, very tangibly so.

Thank you so much, my dear PN6...

And that is coming from one who is likely an alcoholic (with no plan to quit). Thank you, and cheers, I salute you and will soon stagger off to bed.

Know this-- it IS possible to walk away from the bottle. You may have no plan to quit, but that's gonna change. I guarantee it.
