I had not visited the Philly area for about 10 years when I went down there
in 1981 to hook up with a friend who had stopped there.

When they have "Best of Philly" competitions, the cheesesteak category is
something of a joke... I never found a single neighborhood joint that didn't
make a phenomenol cheesesteak.

On this trip. the MOMENT I arrived, I asked for the nearest cheesestead &
hoagie place. I ordered TWO pizza steaks (my favorite).

I had forgotten how ENORMOUS and packed with meat and cheese they
were. I could barely finish one of them.

There's a coupla places here in Tucson now that'll do 'em justice (there
weren't ANY up 'til about 10 years ago), but they're scrawny cousins of
the legendary REAL Philly cheesesteaks.

Once, I had to book a flight to Tucson at the last minute and it was a
3-leg flight and NONE of the legs served a meal. I had bought and was
bringing a hoagie to MiddleFingerMomDad and on the third leg of the
flight, came THIS close to telling him that I could only afford to bring
him half-a-hoagie.

first thing he did was buy a REAL cheese steak! Was in Ok City once and they tried serving some kind of bastardized version of one. You CAN NOT just throw a piece of steak between two pieces of bread and a slice of cheese and call THAT cheese steak. That is just blasphemy! The BF got the pizza steak.

... Philly's Finest. The kid behind the counter looked at me blankly and
asked, "Pizzasteak????"

Then he brightened and told me they had BBQ sauce they could put on it.

True story.

I got a cheesesteak and wondered if they had ever been east of the
Mississippi before.
