Does Root Beer taste like Crest toothpaste to you? It can't just be me...
Must be an acquired taste.

(720 posts)I went to Jungle Jims and bought every one they had. Tried them all. IBC was the winner and I used it like champagne, as a celebration. I have since decided that everyday is cause for celebration and I enjoy IBC daily.
But to your point, all the companies hate putting out a root beer flavor because it is more expensive than the other flavors, but the public still demands root beer.

(47,552 posts)Seriously, kids. One sip'll take you back to the A&W drive-in of the 1960's.
(I do believe that's the house root beer at Chili's these days.)

(20,176 posts)Or is it one type of root beer you tried that tastes bad?
A lot of the store brands and cheaper national brands are artificially-flavored, usually with a melange of other stock flavors to attempt to create the complex flavor profile of naturally-flavored root beers; two of those stock artificial flavors sometimes thrown into the mix are cinnamon and peppermint. I've had some of those...I see how they could taste like toothpaste.
The same problem exists with cola...real cola and Coke/Pepsi are flavored with just a few drops of ridiculously-expensive essential botanical oils. (The blend of oils are closely-guarded secrets specific to each brand as they're what gives those brands their distinctive flavors. In Coke's case, it's cassis oil among other things.) Store-brands and discount brands don't want to spend the money, so they attempt to simulate it with artificial flavors...which is why store brand colas often taste like crap and nothing is refreshing in quite the same way as an ice-cold Coke.
My suggestion is to get one 4 or 6 pack of the real thing (the price will rival good craft beers, be prepared to drop possibly $6-7) or a growler and try that to see if you like it. Alternately, find a restaurant that has it on tap or bottle.

(36,827 posts)There are some who go to the trouble of making the flavoring from scratch. I use the extract from a place that uses all natural flavorings. I have my own CO2 tank for carbonation, but you can also do the ale yeast method which works fine.

(6,261 posts)Yeah, all the ones I've tried have that same essential flavour. I'm not saying it's vile or unpleasant or anything and, for all I know, Crest set out to duplicate it, but the taste is virtually identical to me.
As far as I know, Root Beer is still an almost uniquely American thing and hasn't conquered the world the way Coca Cola did, which I find interesting.

(5,364 posts)Creamy and smooth but with a strong taste. I don't like it overly carbonated, or too cold, and never drinken from a can. Best I've ever had was as a kid at local restaurant we went to often in the early 70's: It was served cool ( not cold ) in pitchers. It was actually called "birch beer" but tasted just like root beer to me. Kinda' like the difference between sweet potato pie and pumpkin pie. Not a big one.

(6,261 posts)Ah, vindication at last! I was beginning to think I was the only one.
Apparently the primary ingredient in root beer that gives it that flavour is sassafras, which I can't find listed in the ingredients for Crest, but they're apparently coy about providing all of them.

(692 posts)I find that Barq's Root Beer has a nasty taste to it. Could be your tastebuds. I had a glass of Riesling the other night, that I've loved before, but the other night, YUCK! I've had a tiny cold...
