Come meet my friends the Cranes.

No, nothing to do with Fraser and Niles.
These two:

These two Sandhill Cranes adopted my immediate neighborhood last summer. They quickly learned to take handouts of whole kernel corn, chopped boiled eggs, bread, etc.

After a few weeks, the male would take food out of my hand. Cool, except that sharp bill was a little disconcerting. He also became very good at catching things in mid-air.

They left when it froze up before Xmas. I hope they will be back in the spring.

Birds usually do return to their old nesting and successful foraging areas.

I know from personal experience that birds do remember the humans they've grown trust in the past.

-- they were coming 3-4 times a day every day for a handout, and usually got it from my house. If not, they would try another neighbor.
