The Lovely Judy Collins

(34,119 posts)I prefer listening to Donovan, never like Judy Collins, but still a very cool song. Always one of my favorites.

(4,734 posts)I was knee high when I first heard this, when it was actually played on a.m. radio! (ancient history). I was blown away by it. There are a few good versions out there!

(1,011 posts)I sigh. Thanks for reminding me of this beautiful song. An all-time Donovan favourite.
When I first heard it back in the sixties I misheard that line as "violet hash-smoker". Ever since, when I'm waiting on a railway station platform and my gaze lands on a chocolate machine I see a purple hippie shaking and breaking it, and walking away with a face smeared in chocolate.

(4,734 posts)the violet hash smokes of which you speak. And, I also had a lyrics misunderstanding. I thought it was "my, my, they fly" which would be equally appropriate. Some guy named Norcott coved the song in Canada, had to change the "violent hash smoker" to be allowed airplay. I chose the Judy Collins version because of the crystal clarity of her voice to hear the lyrics.
