(2,173 posts)While I was adjusting the band saw one time to get it up on the center of the treads, the damn blade flew off right at my face. Instinctively I threw a hand out and grabbed it in the air. It was at full rotation speed. I still don't know how, but my hand only suffered minor cuts. I was actually afraid to look. I wear safety glasses and a full frontal leather apron, but most of my face is still exposed. It never got close.
The radial arm saw is a nasty thing. I trimmed off a 1/4" edge on a board and the damn thing shot across the garage like an arrow. If anyone had been standing there it would have killed them. I don't let anyone in the garage when I use that thing now.
I don't think most people grasp how dangerous such machines can be. Even the old piston pump trunk saws were dangerous. Give the guy a hug for me. Any job involving power tools is frightening - every single time you use them. And there's no shame in crying. None.

Yeah, I was gonna say that. OSHA often actually does take an interest during Democratic administrations. Don't know what sort of business it is, but it sounds like the risk factor is off the charts.

(14,910 posts)The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 gives employees and their representatives the right to file a complaint and request an OSHA inspection of their workplace if they believe there is a serious hazard or their employer is not following OSHA standards. Further, the Act gives complainants the right to request that their names not be revealed to their employers.
Complaints from employees and their representatives are taken seriously by OSHA. It is against the law for an employer to fire, demote, transfer, or discriminate in any way against a worker for filing a complaint or using other OSHA rights.
OSHA will keep your information confidential. We can help.

(12,454 posts)Have you actually gone to the OSHA website and read the violations? I have read where OSHA hands down some big fines. Maybe you should go to the website and read about how to file a report. OSHA doesn't fuck around here in the Denver area. The company I work for was doing major mechanical and steel renovation on a Federal courthouse here and one day a another subcontractor was working on the roof 18-stories up and had a worker tied off with a piece of rope tied to the belt on his pants as he was right at the edge. Little did they now that right across the the street in the high rise at eye level was an OSHA office for Denver. OSHA saw it go down and went directly and shut that job down in a heart beat. (It was back up in an hour or so.)There was some serious fines for that.

(37,648 posts)after nine years. It was like my heart was ripped out. Every now and then there's a special bond, and Buddy and I had a special bond. I'd found him on the street in horrible condition and nursed him back to health, incl. heartworm treatment at the vet's.
I didn't want another dog after Buddy died (well, I had to put him to sleep finally). But a year later, I found ANOTHER dog in my nieghborhood that no one claimed. 6 mos. old, in good shape. A Jack Russell Terrier mix of some sort. A guy's dog, was how I thought of her. I had no intent to keep her. I decided to find her a home, after not being able to find her owners. I had her fixed and taught her a few basic training things. But then I decided someone else might not take proper care of her. So....she became mine.
Before long, she was sleeping in my bed. I eventually fell in love with her, when I never thought I would. She couldn't be more different from Buddy. But each dog is unique. She's not Buddy, but she is Rosie, and I love her just as much. It will happen.

(12,454 posts)I work for a company that is AISC structural steel, ASME pipe/presure vessel and mechanical contracting with close to 1000 employees and we just got what is called OSHA VPP Star staitus. Less than 0.03% of the companies in America get achive this for safety. We have a safety program where anyone from the office, shops and field crews can stop work if they think or see that something is dangerous and not get in trouble for it. You cannot be legally fired for reporting a safety violation to OSHA. Don't be afraid to go read the OSHA website. My place of work main core value when it comes to safety is that at the end of the day everyone goes home to their family healthy and safe.
