The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsSo my 8 yr old wants to know what "open marriage" is now
So I explained it and gave examples.
Example: So imagine that daddy goes on trips and has a girlfriend with him while he's gone.
She wrinkles up her nose, then I had to explain these "Christians" on the Republican side who think it's ok....and that even though he's a serial sleep around "he's forgiven". (Never mind they raised hell over Clinton's escapades and Weiner's weiner!)
then she finishes my sentence and said "They're not really Christians".
Out of the mouths of babes!
Now the 10 year old, asked me later, "Did Grandpa ever have a girlfriend other than Grandma?"
THANKS NEWT, you have actually made my kids question the STABLE DEMOCRATIC FAMILY that we have.

They are not synonyms.

Of course, almost every ONE I know is a Christian....
But "Christians" behave no better or worse than any other
religious or secular groups do.

(37,748 posts)During Clinton's Presidency, R-Wingers were going on and on about "oral sex parties" and "now my kids want to know about oral sex" and blamed it all on Pres. Clinton.
I imagine that as Gingrich is man of such high ethical standards, he'll gladly accept holding himself to that same morality and accept the responsibility for open marriages and children wanting to know about threesomes.

(20,176 posts)I am of-course joking...but I don't necessarily get why people have an issue with the concept of "open marriage" or "open relationships." They work better for some people and not at all for others.

(56,828 posts)as much as it is the hypocrisy of Newt and the Religious Right in regards to Republican affairs. Plus, with Newt, he was already having an affair for years before he even asked for it. It's one thing if you both agree to an open marriage ahead of time or during the marriage, but to try and force it on another partner after a years long affair just reeks of justifying the affair after the fact.

(20,176 posts)Not about Newt, but that I find it funny that people get funny over something like open marriage.
I have largely the same view of Newton's hypocrisy and in-college heckled Callista Bisek out of the choir of the Shine of the Basilica of the IC for her part in Gingrich's affair.
I don't want one (an open relationship; I've had one before in which I chose to not exercise the "freedoms" I had) but I'm kind of talking to this local lawyer and she's very upfront about her lack-of-belief in monogamy and her preferences for open relationships...so I need to decide if I can be in one. I'm happy though that she was upfront about it rather than springing it on me months in.

(56,828 posts)I would not have brought religion up if my daughter had asked about it.
Not sure what I would have said to her, though. She's 8 and will be 9 next month.
I still get upset that Democrats seem to have to resign or be impeached if they have affairs, while Republicans do not (Gingrich, Vitter, Arnold, etc)

(15,758 posts)Yowtch! Good explanations, by the way. And be proud of your highly intelligent and curious kid! My 8 YO is oblivious to the news (no matter how much I try to bring up current events--if not "open marriage" --only interested in his Xbox. Sigh.
As for her response...
