Lawsuit over mile-high masturbator

A California teenager is suing United Airlines after she said the company did nothing to prevent a fellow passenger from joining the mile-high club with himself.

Monica Amestoy, 18, claims that while flying from New York to Los Angeles last October, she noticed the man fueling his pocket rocket, Courthouse News reported.

Amestoy, who is represented by Gloria Allred, says she allerted a flight attendant, who got the man to stop, but as soon as the attendant left, "the perpetrator exposed his penis and started to masturbate again," Amestoy's complaint states. ...................(more)

1. If he'd done that on the "ground" in front of others, he'd been arrested

and potentially included (for life) on a sex offender registry.

Why should being in a plane be different? This isn't pushing sexual boundaries for thrills as some would have you believe--to do this intentionally in front of others is a perversion.

Let this jerk (off) reap what he sowed.

2. It isn't different. He was arrested.

The article didn't give the perp's name, but said he plead guilty. Whatever that means.

People masturbating in public happens quite frequently. Sometimes it's by perverts, but also includes people with autism or other developmental disorders and the mentally ill.

There's a lot to be desired from this article. It didn't include many details about the perp or how far away from him she was.

6. It is different from the fact that only after the father called police, was he arrested

In the air, these UA staff apparently did not feel the same responsibility to alert law enforcement than would very likely have occurred on the ground--whether from a casual bystander, an observing restaurant employee or whomever.

Yes, I do agree that mental illness, developmental disabilities and the like are possible explanations for this kind of behavior, but given a lack of any such information reported on this score, I assume that not to be the case. At this point, I can only assume him to be a "garden variety" sexual pervert.

4. I wouldn't be surprised if this jerk targeted Ms Amestoy.

She is a young woman caught in a position of little power. Would he have started/continued if it had been a big guy with muscles?

And why does relocation have to be within the same class? If she was in economy, couldn't they move her to business/first class? Or vice versa (compensation could be arranged later).

But, it looks like a lawsuit is required. "The comfort and security of our customers is our top priority, and we will closely review this complaint when we receive it." Actually, UA, she complained at the time.

I'm amazed no male passengers from nearby rows didn't step up and offer to swap seats with the young woman. I most certainly would have.

But UA bears most of the blame.

A phrase that, as it turns out, doesn't actually mean what I thought it meant.

On edit: I should perhaps mention that I agree that the man certainly should have been arrested.

8. MYTH: Joining the Mile-High Club is Illegal

Well, yes and no. According to the Civil Aviation Authority no specific laws govern the matter, though Britain's 2004 Sexual Offences Act includes sex in a public lavatory. Even the Half-Mile Club (masturbation), depicted in the film The Hangover, is only technically illegal-at least in public view at your seat. The full act's legality depends on national laws (tricky when a plane traverses international skies), company policy, and the aircraft's place of registration, but you're potentially exposing yourself to public complaints and suits. Otherwise, generally the worst is that you're asked to stop (continue and you're subject to prosecution). Last spring during a London-Bangalore flight, U.K supermodel Sarah Hannon allegedly discovered boyfriend Daniel Melia getting his "bang on" with socialite Clare Irby. The latter two were charged with gross indecency. A copulating couple also "outraged public decency" on a 1999 American Airlines flight, netting a fine (banning is more likely). But that's an exception. Even though celebs such as Janet Jackson, Virgin mogul Richard Branson, and supposedly Ralph Fiennes are club members, cross this fantasy off your bucket list just in case. Besides, you risk physical injury pretzeling in those tiny bathrooms.

Wherever it occurs. Why do people inevitably respond to charges of sexual assault or lewdness toward an unwilling person like they have no concept what consent is?
