(12,237 posts)I remember their spectacular Himalayan blue poppies -- never saw them growing anywhere but at Butchart. I wish I could keep them alive in my garden.

(20,776 posts)The one thing that really amazed me was seeing a palm tree on Vancouver island. While the City of Vancouver experiences a snow storm, there sits that Palm tree a few miles away. Surely you would think it would die in the cold..but I guess the island is a little warmer than the mainland, up there!

(17,101 posts)when it gets to freezing here, it rarely gets below that in the winter. But it's also in the rain shadow of the Olympic mountains, so we don't get the amount of precipitation (whether rain or snow) Vancouver does (still plenty though!)

(6,154 posts)I've seen the odd one in peoples gardens. They don't love the cold but it doesn't get cold enough to kill most of them. I'm sure it's only certain species that can grow here. In fact you can grow banana "trees" here too, they don't fruit but I've seen them in a few places. We only get a few days of below zero weather per year here. Vancouver and Victoria have about the same annual temperatures.

(33,258 posts)I loved Buchart Gardens and Victoria, in general. I'd move there tonight if given the chance.

(6,154 posts)I'm in Vancouver. I think the last time I saw the gardens must be close to 20 years ago now though, lol. Nice shot.
