Just went to check my GPS (Delorme PN-40) before going moon hunting and the batteries went bad. Only a little acid, and I cleaned the contacts off with a wire brush and popped another set in and it still works.
There's still some residue in the battery compartment, though. Do you think soaking a q-tip in a baking soda solution and dabbing it around would clean it up enough? Any other ideas?

If they were alkaline cells, then clean with a little solution of vinegar or lemon juice first, and then use a light solution of baking soda.
