Fake flowers in a nice vase? Tacky or tasteful?

So you got your fake flowers in a nice vase. Silk flowers....not those cheapo plastic ones. Still, they're fake.

Tacky or tasteful? Are you in the "You know, I can't tell the difference sometimes until I smell them" group, or are you in the "Tooooo tacky! Yuk!" group?

But, they attract dust like crazy and are hard to clean, rendering them mostly (with some exceptions), tacky IMO....

You can clean silk flowers by shaking them gently in a paper bag with some corn meal. Never tried it so I don't know if it works

I usually just take them outside and spray them down with the air-nozzle fine-tip on the compressor but, since most people don't have a compressor, canned air works just as well.

I think they're supposed to be Mums or something. Whatever. They are red. My two year old granddaughter likes to sniff them when she visits

Perhaps rubber plants. I think it depends on the leaves. Truthfully, I don't have a lot of plants anymore.

Real flowers get thrown away when they die. Fake ones just sit there forever, gathering dust.

the colours. And colour is part of the experience of flowers. Certain colour combinations are like music.

a designer point out things not to do, that are design killers. Fake flowers was one of them. But the silk flowers looked pretty to me. Still, I got rid of them because every time I looked at them after that, I thought of what that designer said. I like to think of myself as classic in design style, and I'm a bit proud of my decor skills. But I hadn't realized that fake flowers were cheap looking (if the flowers LOOKED real).

So I got rid of them, but kept a dried flower arrangement. I was wondering, though, if others agreed with that designer on the fake flowers. Looks like they do!

about designer opinions...

fuck them.

I've seen some alleged "designer" stuff that looked like garbage.

I have much the same thoughts on paid movie critics.

flowers, they screamed cheap & tacky to me, after what that designer said. I guess I'm easily influenced in some ways.

I also can't do some other things that "experts" have said not to do: I never wear white shoes (modeling teacher on tv said they make your feet look big, like Minnie Mouse); I never wear capri pants (fashion stylist says they make everyone look shorter & fatter - which I agree with BTW); I try not to wear horizontal stripes (a no-no for women over a certain age); and other things like that. And now....no fake flowers!

I have a couple of holiday arrangements that look pretty nice. I got them at Michael's, so they weren't cheap-o. I don't leave them out all year.

It all comes down to what you like. If you enjoy the look of them, what is it hurting anyone?

I used to be a tad pretentious about things that I did not see the beauty in, but I realized that we are all different, and we all like different things. The old lady who lived next to me always "planted" those cheap plastic flowers all around her house, and I was appalled. But she just loved them......how can I judge!

I have fake flowers. I have fake fruit on the kitchen table. I have a kitsch garden. And as a joke, everyone I know buys me pink flamingo everything (window decorations, pajamas, mug, yard ornaments, beanie baby, etc.), and I have embraced them....just because I have decided that the people who try to make all these judgments have a stick up their butts.

My suggestion to the people who say "tacky": Get over it!

If it's done right they can look fine. Real flowers can look crappy if they're done wrong.

Sometimes someone's being arty about it.

Just doesn't matter. Said another way, whatever floats their boat.

it takes my mind to the outdoors, and it's a pleasant thing...flowers are pretty. I buy real ones once a year, but they don't last long. But I love them while they last.
