She had a string of hits in the early 60s in that period before The Beatles changed everything like It's My Party and You Don't Own Me. Her record producer and arranger was none other than Quincy Jones who had such a big impact on Michael Jackson's career.
I kind of like this one from 1963: Young and Foolish.
It's My Party, her big hit from 1963 (Billboard #1, Grammy) recorded when she was just 16:
The unofficial feminist anthem of her era You Don't Own Me (gold record with over 1 million sold, peaked at #2 in 1964 right behind I Want To Hold Your Hand)
Her big hit from 1965:

(3,286 posts)And though it didn't really make sense until a few years later, the lyrics and philosophy of "You Don't Own Me" cut through the hormone fueled adolescent angst and allowed me to see girls differently. They still behaved the same (for a couple of more years), seeing themselves as 'property' and if they didn't completely cut the ties to that system then, they had another chance in the 70's.

(20,453 posts)You could say her character's voice was that way, too.
Lesley Gore was different in the music world when I was a kid and my big sister and friends related to her. I remember distinguishing her from the typical female stuff.

(21,020 posts)I'm 60 and remember her well.
I lived through her angst of being dissed at her own party, and rejoiced in the revenge she got on that little Jezebel, Judy (totally ignoring the fact that her boyfriend was a huge shithead).
Teen aged drama.
Which now seems pretty silly. But hey, when you're a pre-teen yourself, it all makes sense.

(4,056 posts)But that's inaccurate. Her real name was Goldstein.
Just in case anyone's wondering about the connection.

(684 posts)came out as lesbian in 2005 and said how hard it was for her to sing those songs
about boyfriends when she always had a girl in mind.
From Wiki:
Beginning in 2004, Gore hosted the PBS television series In the Life, which focused on LGBT issues. She stated in a 2005 interview that she was a lesbian. At the time of the interview, Gore had been living with her partner for more than 23 years.
She wrote 'Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows' and my fave 'California Nights' with Marvin Hamlisch and also composed the music for the movie 'Fame' with her brother Michael Gore.

"Out Here On My Own"
Sometimes I wonder
Where I've been
Who I am, do I fit in?
Make-believing is hard alone
Out here, on my own
We're always proving
Who we are
Always reaching
For that rising star
To guide me far
And shine me home
Out here on my own
When I'm down and feeling blue
I close my eyes so I can be with you
Oh, baby, be strong for me
Baby, belong to me
Help me through
Help me need you
Until the morning sun appears
Making light of all my fears
I dry the tears I've never shown
out here on my own
But when I'm down and feeling blue
I close my eyes so I can be with you
Oh, baby, be strong for me
Baby, belong to me
Help me through
Help me need you
Sometimes I wonder
Where I've been
Who I am, do I fit in?
I may not win
But I can't be thrown
Out here on my own
Out here
On my own

(1,999 posts)I had a metal wastebasket (Flintstones, actually) and a little reel-to-reel tape recorder. Theorizing that if I stuck the wastebasket over my head and sang, it would create an echo chamber effect, I recorded myself singing "You Don't Own Me" and the song by Patty Duke, "Don't Just Stand There" with my head in the wastebasket.
I'm embarrassed thinking about it. but it really did sound very cool. Unfortunately, my mom used my wastebasket when she gathered up trash and emptied ashtrays upstairs, and I ended up getting a bit sick from the exposure to the minute amount of ash that remained in situ.

(30,778 posts)She was one of the first pop artists I paid attention to.
She and her brother wrote music for the movie "Fame." I remember her Batman appearances, too.
Interesting that she is a lesbian. She has lived with her partner for 23 years. Wow.
