Seriously. She was counter culture, a free spirit, a sincere activist in environmental and human rights/animal rights issues. She mocked the stereotypes being created around her image. She was courageous for her era and fought back against the exploitation promoted by her industry. She also dropped out of the celebrity world in spite of the loss in income to protect her own privacy.

I also had similar feelings about Jane Fonda.

But that's a male's perspective, having grown up in sixties America.

I should add, I've never seen either Wonder Woman or Xena. I assume they were television shows.

as a little girl I watched Wonder Woman, that and the pixi hair cuts were my gateway to gay. Later as a young woman watching Xena just sealed the deal.

According to Roz Doyle (Frasier):

Actually, I didn't misunderstand anything. You made so much fun of my costume, I got so embarassed, so I lied. Wonder Woman really is my hero. I mean, she's smart and beautiful, moral, and totally independent.

But I never was a huge comic book fan, although I did enjoy me some Fantastic Four in my pre-teen days.

The WW teevee show was okay but I was more into Isis. I seriously dug her aviator glasses. I also liked The Bionic Woman and thought her character was pretty cool.

As for Xena, bloslut jr. and I watched the hell out of that show. Campy, melodramatic and sometimes even deep. Lucy Lawless was the bomb and movie people forever lost the perfect opportunity to cast her as the perfect Wonder Woman. Now she's "too old".

That show was for guys to "watch" late at night before the internet was the internet. I can never consider it something to look up to.

who don't traipse around dressed like they walked out of some teenage boy's porn fantasy? Because I can't even begin to image one of them as my role model.
