The Kimchee Story:

Last edited Thu Jul 25, 2013, 07:59 AM - Edit history (1)

Some years ago Miz t. was on a flight from SFO to Anchorage, AK.
An hour or so after take off a strange odor began to permeate the cabin.
One of the flight attendants became concerned and called the cockpit.
The flight engineer came back and sniffed around.
"Doesn't smell like anything burning, I don't know what it is."
It became more pungent.

The co-pilot came back.
Checked the galleys and restrooms.
"I don't know, but it's sure strong."

Then the captain came back.
Came to where the odor was strongest and looked around.
Spied an Asian lady in a window seat.
"Excuse me ma'am, but do you have some kimchee?"
"Why yes I do. I'm taking it to my son. He's stationed at Elmendorf Air Force base in Anchorage."

She had placed the earthenware container under the seat in front of her and it had tipped over and was leaking.

she asked if we found her in a cabbage patch. My son told her no, a kimchee patch. They still both refer to her as a kimchee doll 25 years later.

for my Korean Grandmother. When she passed on, my father begged her not to make it any further as it was too much for his stomach. Since I was not around at the time, she didn't have me to ask, however...I would have sided with my dad. She did make it very strong.

He decided one night to make soup with it.

Three people had been sitting in the living room, two on the computers and one watching TV, but as soon as the steam started to waft we all ran for our rooms and slammed the doors. Even the cats hid. It took an hour of open windows and room spray to get the smell down to a tolerable level, and after that he was forbidden to cook the stuff in the house anymore. He wanted it hot, he cooked it on the grill and ate it on the porch. No exceptions. We threatened armed revolution if he heated that stuff in the house again.

Vile-smelling stuff, kimchee.

there was a Korean-American guy a couple of doors down from me in the dorm. There was never any doubt at our end of the hall when he opened a care package from Mom.
