(6,234 posts)The Silmarillion, and really all of Tolkien's middle earth stuff, just no longer works for me. And what ruins it is Tolkien's never-ending praise of the Elves. The Hobbit and Silmarillion are the worst in this regard. The Silmarillion is the story of how the wonderful marvelous glorious Elvish people, so wise and noble, never miss an opportunity to act like backstabbing ungreatful petulant dishonorable two year old children. This might be fine if the author made a point of this, but instead he spends damn near every page detailing how wonderful these jerks are, while simultaniously badmouthing everyone else (who rarely, if ever, screw anyone and basically act about as honorably as one might expect when surrounded by freaking Elves).
