anybody else kept up by katydids?

oh, I wish they didn't!

last two nights they kept me up.
last nite they were so loud, I thot they must have gotten inside and were in the hall. Nope, they were outside - in the back of the building, and even tho I sleep in the front of the building, with the ac on for white noise, they sounded like they were outside my door.

tonite I'm going to wear ear plugs.

1. I have the opposite feeling about katydids

I welcome them each summer, and hate to see them go as fall begins. I keep a window open so I can hear them as I fall asleep. I grew up without insect sounds (save crickets). It took a while to get used to them but now I love them.

I hope you can sleep better tonight.

I love the natural world, and during the day I love the sound of insects. it's one of my favorite sounds when I go to the woods, to listen to birds and insects.

5. I also love insect sounds and often go to sleep listening to recordings of crickets...

... and the like on YouTube (though more often than not I listen to rain, thunder and/or
distant train whistles/horns).
.
Search for "nature sounds" on YouTube -- and add specifics like crickets or thunder.
.
Often the recordings are 8-10 hours long -- enough to get you through the night and
then some.

One of my favorites is the sound of rain on a tent roof (with some thunder). I went
to sleep many a night in the field in the Army and found that sound extremely soothing,
even when the weather (and I) was COLD and miserable.

8. i grew up w/o ac too, I think almost everyone did in the 50's, 60's.

I do use AC now when it is hot, but I always like the moderate weather so I can go to sleep to the insect sounds.

except the very LOUD ones, lol.

I also like in the summer going to sleep to the sound of peoples' voices. I live alone and it makes me feel very safe. It is fascinating - there are the early voices - the children home from school -well, I'm not sleeping then..

then the men come home from work, then later the teenager voices.

sometimes when I can't sleep, I watch tv all nite - not very good for my mental health, but kinda fun, once in a while.

6. I am very sensitive to sounds, so can relate.

And while I love the sounds of katydids, crickets, frogs etc., if they are "too" close or "too" loud it makes me crazy and I can't relax. I have a sound machine app on my ipad that I use. I drown them out with ocean waves if they are too bad....it's a very fine line for me from soothing to annoying...

Good luck tonight!!!

9. thanks! :) I am sensitive to all sounds -

in my apt I hear the upstairs neighbor, and it drives me crazy. Even tho they are not particular noisy as far as that goes -
but just them living their lives, is really noisy to me, and in fact bad for my nerves.

so I play a lot of tapes and cd's with relaxing music, and fan and ac to drown it out.

10. As a kid I could calculate the temperature with cricket chirps per minute

but I've forgotten how that worked.
Doing the chirp math was usually enough to put me to sleep.

11. I wonder how long it takes for katydids to get laid and quit their passionate serenading..

anyway, the ear plugs worked real well last nite.
so well that when I woke up, I forgot I had them in and had a moment of panic before I realized why my hearing was blocked.

Since I have tinnitus, however, I get to "listen" to them 24/7.
