Asihwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit, are imho one of the best Dancers in Bollywood, probably due to the fact they had extensive classical dance training before they became Bollywood actresses.

Devdas. It's one of my favorite movies. I have both the movie and the soundtrack -- I even read the book too. I have quite a few Hindi movies, most of them are fairly old by now, as I haven't bought any in a few years. I'll have to look for some on you Tube as you suggest. Aishwarya Rai is one of my favorites too. Thank you!

Lagaan - Once Upon a Time in India (2001) has a ranking of 95% on Rotten Tomatos
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/lagaan/

Lagaan tells the tale of the Indian village Champaner, beset by drought and British colonialism in the year 1893. Without a drop of rain in months, the worried villagers of Champaner decide to ask the local authorities for a temporary repeal of their taxes -- the hated lagaan. Led by the heroic Bhuvan (Indian superstar Aamir Khan) they bring their plight to the military governor, Captain Russell (Paul Blackthorne). But the sadistic Russell threatens to raise the lagaan threefold, unless the villagers can beat his men at a game of cricket, in which case he'll lift taxes on the entire province for a period of three years.

Bhuvan accepts the challenge, but there's a problem -- no one in Champaner knows how to play cricket. A band of misfits come to the rescue, coached by Russell's soft-hearted sister Elizabeth (Rachel Shelley), and the race is on to be ready in three months' time. An epic reworking of Victory with eye-popping song-and-dance routines, Lagaan was a major cinematic event in India upon its release. ~ Connor McMadden, Rovi

Rang De Basanti (Paint it Yellow) (2005)
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/rang_de_basanti/

A young idealistic English filmmaker, Sue, arrives in India to make a film on Indian revolutionaries Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad, and their contemporaries and their fight for freedom from the British Raj. Owing to a lack of funds, she recruits students from Delhi University to act in her docu-drama. While making the film, the students come to realize the courage of the revolutionaries who struggled before them.

I will definitely check them out. Do you live in India now? I went there many years ago with a friend who was originally from there, that's how I learned about India, Indian culture and grew to admire and appreciate them. One place I went to with my friend was Lucknow, which I'm sure you know all about. We visited the old residency there and the Bara Imambara -- OMG -- so impressive!

One of my daughters took Baratnatiyam lessons for two years too. What an incredible dance genre. I don't think I've ever seen more complicated dancing unless it was another form of Indian dance.

If your daughter learned Baratantyam then you would definitely know a lot about classical Indian dance. I'm impressed. How did you/your daughter decide to learn Baratanatyam? if you do not mind me asking.

As you pointed out, Baratanatyam is as classical as it gets . My mom learned Baratanatyam when she was young, and she used to say that it takes a lot of practice to perform well. It's a good thing me and my sibling both turned out to be boys..otherwise we would have had a hard teacher to learn Baratanatyam from . Instead we learned Carnatic Music and Mridangam, a percussion instrument.

I live in California, but Ive been to Lucknow once..when I was in my early teens, If my memory serves right. yep, I love visiting those ancient places. Maybe one day I'll visit Cambodia/Thailand, I've always been interested in their architecture and history as well.

Here is a recent Baratanatyam Video I ran into, on youtube. I think its pretty cool.

None of the Indian Moviegoers realized that the actress who played the character Harleen Kaur from the movie Love Aaj Kal was Brazillian even when they saw the movie in the theaters. They assumed she was Indian till the director let them in on the suprising fact a few days later . She plays the role of a Village girl flawlessly!

yep, the songs/movies want me to go watch something too. Often I end up watching some movie online after i start out to watch only a few songs only, on youtube.

I doubt there is anything called "real" Bollywood , given the wide range of styles the directors use, so dont worry about the street cred of the movies

Rang De Basanti - Tu Bin Bataye ~ A romantic song

?hd=1

info
Movie: Rang De Basanti (paint it yellow)
Song : Tu Bin Bataye

This movie switches back and forth between the Indian Struggle for freedom from the British, and today when the younger generation struggles against corrupt politicians.

DJ or Daljeet, Sukhi, Karan, Aslam and Sonia are 5 friends who having graduated from Delhi University, hesitate to get out into the real world, and still roam the campus. Each of them is feisty and loyal. Into this group comes Sue straight from the UK, all determined to make her film on Indian freedom fighters, despite the shortage of funds. Introduced to the others by Sonia, she develops a strong bond with the rest, and especially with DJ. She persuades them to act in the film, and even woos Hindutva-vadi student party-worker Pandey to take the role of Ramprakash Bismil.

Gradually the friends ponder over their roles and the lives of the selfless freedom-fighters, and in the face of a tragedy, realize that they too, like Bhagat Singh and Azad, must take action, to ensure that their now corrupt and poverty-laden country, awakens and the guilty do not go unpunished. How they do it, makes for an engrossing second-half. Written by Amodini

Lnguage: Telugu

In 1609 AD, Mitravinda, a princess, and Kala Bhairava, the warrior that she loved, die. 400 years later, the warrior is reincarnated as Harsha, a motorcycle stuntman. He brushes hands with a girl and sparks fly as he begins to recall his past life. Knowing that he is destined to love this young woman, he sets about trying to identify her. Indu(The young Woman) does not remember her past life and keeps Harsha at a distance; playing tricks on him until she gets to know him better. However, just as the two begin to fall in love, a sinister force from their shared past returns!

PS: We know that the Ride of the Valkyries became popular when it played during the Ride of the Air Cavalry in the movie "Apocalypse now". Interestingly enough, an Indian movie from 1948 also plays the ride of the Valkyries during a scene in the movie when the Cavalry charges. I found this similarity very interesting. Pure coincidence, but interesting nevertheless.

Why This Kolaveri Di? (Why this Killer rage? girl)

?hd=1

Nominated by CNN as the world's most popular Youtube Song of 2011, and the most watched Indian song of All time on youtube, I think this song deserves a post of its own. "Kolaveri" means "Killer Rage" in Tamil.

Btw, This Entire song is mostly in English (but intentionally in Broken/Colloquial English, for the added fun factor) with a few Tamil words thrown in.

The Song is supposed to be sung by a Guy who has just been Dumped by his girlfriend. His lamentation of "why are you so hatin on me?" sets the theme of the song. Listen to it and see if you could understand it...after all its in English . The song was composed to be part of the Tamil language movie "3".

In less than 3 months it has racked up a total of more than 42 Million views on youtube(for the main upload) and another 20-30 million views on copied uploads/remakes/parodies/remixes) and counting.

Here is CNN on the song, the most popular song of 2011
