Does TIVO provide the same functions as a smart TV?

I wonder if a smart TV is not needed when you have TIVO.

You can have nexflix, Hulu and youtube with TIVO (though youtube is different)

But it looks like some smart tv's have a web browser built in, so maybe a smart tv is worth it.

What do you think?

1. A smart TV is not really worth the premium price.

My "smart" setup consists of my xbox, Blueray player and ROKU.
With that I get netflix, hulu plus, youtube and other stuff I don't use.
Whether TIVO will provide the same functions, I'd say mostly, but the question is: how many of those would you use?
If you aren't buying the TIVO for the DVR functions, the other stuff is not worth the monthly premium.

2. It's smarter to buy an external box like an Apple TV or a Roku.

When you depend on the 'smart' functionality built into a TV, you are stuck with it for the life of the TV.

External boxes are cheap and you can replace them every couple of years.

They also much more often get firmware upgrades.

Pay less for the TV, get a $99 dollar Apple TV or Roku box.

And there is Hulu and lots of other programs. It streams in HD too. Love it.

Tivo is a DVR. A Smart TV does not record anything.

Other than that the features you use will determine what you need - I have a smartTV and xbox360 and ps3 and wiiU and my DVR is from my cable company. I love using the SmartTV for Netflix as it's one less device to get to the movies. Before I got the tv i used my ps3 for netflix but being smart wasn't the reason I got the TV. I wanted a flat panel LED/LCD TV and the one I got was the best/biggest I could afford and of the choices available at the time it was Smart too. If there had been a version without smart for less money and the same specs I would have gotten that.

But of the devices I have, I use my DVR the most. We rarely watch anything but live sports on live tv - we record everything we like and watch at our leisure and fast-forward through commercials.

5. Thanks for the replies! But I wonder, you don't get a web browser with Roku, etc, do you?

That's pretty much was tempting me towards the smart TV. Being able to surf the web from the tv
