First, for this I didn't know what to call them -- totems, no; fobs, no. Google says the word is "charms." They seem to be universal, I don't remember seeing any vehicle without something. Is there anybody who doesn't use something on the rear view mirror? Is it just a good luck or fending off catastrophe, something like the revoked St Christopher for travelers?
Mine: a mati eye; a pineapple symbol of fortune and good will/welcome; and the beads (faded by sun) of the red-yellow-green = Vietnam.

(20,886 posts)I have a client who insists on calling me while he's driving. I'm sure he's safe and legal and all that with hands free, through the speakers operation, but I can catch only about every fourth word due to road noise, static and break up. Seriously, he can't wait to get home before he calls me? Drive me nuts.

(72,300 posts)I was lost wandering through my photobucket looking for a picture that I know is in there somewhere.
Now there is an Ed Hardy tiger pouch hanging from the mirror. I stick my cell phone and blue tooth in the pouch while I'm driving.

(54,256 posts)They serve to restrict your forward vision.
And that's dangerous to you and others.
Down here in coastal Alabama they tend to be ropes of Mardi Gras beads.
Also mortar board tassels for recent high school grads.
Whatever, they're not a good thing to have hanging in your vision of the road ahead.

(23,272 posts)In all honesty I've got a handmade beaded ornament that was given to me by a close friend who has since passed. I hung it on my rearview mirror when she handed it to me as a gift 8 years ago.
She was so proud of it, she thought it would be a way for her to make a buck or two selling them.
She never did realize that dream
Its a great reminder in the car to drive safely so I have a future with opportunities.
Besides its beautiful. She had great talent

I do have something that hangs around my stick shift (oh man--that doesn't sound right)

(11,065 posts)They're distracting and block some vision. Having some stuff hanging off the rear view mirror would drive me wacko. And as far as I'm concerned anything that blocks your full vision is really stupid.

(23,233 posts)....but I stuck a little suction-cup hook on top of my dashboard, and hung a necklace that has some personal significance on it. That way it doesn't obstruct my vision, and doesn't bang against the dashboard all the time.

knows instantly how big of a player you are...
Best fits are classic/modern muscle cars, and/or clean, tastefully modified trucks for street or offroad applications
