The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsMiddleFingerMom epitomized DU's Lounge…
I've never been much of a lounge lizard here at DU but as lounge acts go
MFM has been the embodiment of DU's Lounge for several years running. Though many good DUers have come and gone through these hallowed halls, MiddleFingerMom's presence really seems to have left a lasting mark.
I would be in favor of dedicating DU's Lounge to the immortal MiddleFingerMom by renaming it MFM's Lounge in his memory.
MiddleFingerMom, you are truly immortal and sincerely missed.

(102,501 posts)I feel like I should share my MFM story that underscores what a kind and sensitive man he was...
Years ago, MFM and I had a misunderstanding, probably shortly after he started posting at DU... I didn't know him, nor his humor at the time and found his lounge reference to a "hung" dog (which coincided with a real story in GD involving animal cruelty and hanging dogs) hard to take... I alerted, the post was hidden by a unanimous jury who likewise misunderstood the intent of his post. Needless to say, that jury hide devastated MFM, who PM'd me to explain how he felt and how he had meant it and how he wished I had engaged him to ask about it, rather than alert.
I apologized to him for the misunderstanding, explained my deep sensitivities to anything that even hinted at making light of animal cruelty and we came to a mutual appreciation and understanding that might not have occurred otherwise. Nonetheless, I knew I had "wounded" him deeply, being a very sincere and sensitive man-- and always felt badly about it. Thereafter, I always tried to step in, if I saw another DUer mistaking his particular brand of humor and he became among my favorite DUers--as I know he did others.
It touched me to see the deep friendship (both in real life, and on DU) that existed between Kalii and MFM. I know that meant the world to MFM and to Kali--though she must surely be feeling the loss most intensely now.
To this day, I still intensely feel the 2005 loss of Kephra (as well as the other many DUers we've lost over the years). Kephra, for those who don't know, was instrumental in the early days of making LBN a premiere site for real time news from reliable sources the world over. So, just as LBN should be dedicated in the name of Kephra (Scott), I'd heartily endorse the DU Lounge be dedicated in the name of MFM (MiddleFingerMom, aka Jim).
We'll miss you, MFM

I "met" him a little later in the party....I rarely came by the Lounge.
And then one day I saw this crrrrazy ass name and thought, "thats gotta be the coolest woman on earth!"
Then, when I figured out he was a guy.....that was just tooooooo funny. After I recovered from being confused
He cracked me up alllll the time. If i replied every time i loved a post, I'd have looked like a groupie

his that had me seriously laughing out loud. I remember too finding out he was a man, and was so impressed! I still can't believe he's gone.

(20,582 posts)I know many don't believe in a heaven, but I have to believe there's somewhere, that all these special people that mean so much to us find their way to ...I couldn't handle some of the losses in my life if I didn't believe that. And I can fully see MFM up there offering laughter, comfort, and so much love.

(42,001 posts)Jim was certainly one of the main things that kept me coming back to DU, even when other things drove me away. Every now and then he'd get bent about how we didn't respond to his posts, even started a couple of battles over his irritation. Even he and I got into one fierce pissing match. But dammit, he was too funny to stay mad at for any length of time, and he and I both knew his curmudgeonly side was actually made of absolute goo.
Well I remember when he got himself tombstoned, so upset that something he'd meant one way had been misunderstood that he went all "Top 'o the World, Ma!" on Skinner. Never, NEVER have I seen so many people rally around and beg to have someone reinstated. It just went to show the whole, complicated, fascinating, delightful man and what a wild horse of feeling we all rode along with him. If I'd had a big brother...a naked, hairy, angelic big brother...it would have been Jim.
MFM was a piece of performance art that Jim was brilliant at creating, and that, like a naked Santa Claus, brought out the desire in all of us to keep the tale being told. That old body may have given in and taken him away from us, but I think the legend will, and should, live on.
The MFM Lounge it is, and always will be for me. Travel easy, Jim. We'll take it from here.

(12,769 posts)MFM is one of the first to come to mind. Some of us are quiet in the lounge but we appreciate the respite and the humor. His death is quite a blow to anyone who knew him and any honor bestowed upon him would be happily appreciated by those that appreciated his many posts.

(13,661 posts)he had some great replies in other people's posts, but he was so prolific I don't know if there is a way to get everything in one place.
Sure would be great to have for comic relief, though. I know people can do a name search for his posts, but it'd be fun if there were an MFM page / collection...
Anyone have any thoughts?
