DU Album of the Day: Emerson Lake & Palmer - "Brain Salad Surgery"

I felt like overwhelming to the max prog rock sounds today and thought ELP would fit into that mix perfectly. This is also one of those albums that you really need to listen to from start to finish to really appreciate the masterpiece that ELP created. However there was also one big radio hit for ELP off the album - "Karn Evil 9 1st Impression Part 2". Of course most non-prog rock fans/ELP fans would be like 'huh?'. It's better known as "Welcome to the Show"

Here is "Karn Evil 9 1st Impression Part 2" done live -

and saw the tour a few months later - when they toured with the massive quadraphonic sound system. Amazing stuff. ELP's "Jerusalem" is to this day one of the most majestic and powerful pieces of music any band has ever done. And "Karn Evil 9" is challenged only by "Close to the Edge" and "Gates of Delerium" as the greatest extended piece of prog ever.

Too bad that Greg Lake has been, by all accounts, a snotty, spoiled diva and thoroughly unpleasant human being for the last three decades.

I had a friend in high school whose three cats were named Emerson, Lake and Palmer. I don't recall her being quite as cool as the names of her cats.

Guess I'll take the odd day AOTD posting tomorrow . . .

Amazing that they were able to take that on the road, given the massive amount of gear required. At the time it was analog synths, requiring endless tuning, which drove their keyboard tech bonkers.

The sequencer solo at the end sounds amazing in quad.

The report is actually on Alberto Ginastera, an Argentinian modern (i.e. atonal/abstract) classical composer who's Piano Sonata #1, 4th movement was used on this album.

Just odd that you picked this today. He gave the presentation early at the Tuesday class, but today was when he was supposed to give it.
