(6,163 posts)Do your neighbors have a problem with the rooster heralding a new day?
I am not in a HOA and checked our town ordinance. They DO allow chickens, but not roosters.
I then found a site online called BackYardChickens.com and they had the most adorable plans for chicken coops. If I were younger, I might be tempted....
Oh, and your video was fun and you did great!
mopinko
(70,103 posts)i guess its not for a lot of people, so if you really are interested, used coops are not that hard to find.
not everyone loves the rooster. but its hard to really judge. people think that you arent supposed to keep them, so there were a couple complaints. but i also have so many that just love him. people tell me how he reminds them of home, or of their grandmother.
he is a good boy, and he keeps an eye on the girls for me.
the trouble with hen only ordinances is that sometimes things dont work out that way. out of a dozen original chicks, who were all supposed to be girls, i got 2 roos. people generally dont keep them. you dont really need to do that.
there are noise ordinances, but unless it is a loud rooster, and crows all damn day, and you got 3 people willing to complain, you are legal.
mostly people love them, tho. they get visitors all day.

(70,103 posts)the funny thing about that- i have pursued 4 separate fields of study, officially, including, wait for it- a certificate in graphic design from the school of institute department of CONTINUING STUDIES. at age 55.
my first pass through academe i did a work/study stint in the teevee studio back when that was a new fangled thing.
havent spent too much time on the other side of the thing, tho, and hate to see pics of myself.
imma just leave this right here. i could use to blow off a little steam, but i think i might go clean the chicken coop instead.
thanks for the

(70,103 posts)no, still just 3 big tats, till my daughter finishes her training.
you got the gossip wrong about my weight. intestines bringing me down, you could say.
and it was a $6,000 door, top dollar union labor. the old one leaked the chicago hawk. with all the new windows, it came out great and our gas bills are tiny now.
lots o folks got troubles, but trouble dont trouble me too often.
y'all wish you had my life.

eta, i might have mentioned that the government should pay for the chickens. if the city of chicago were to hand out free day old chicks, at a cost to itself of about 50¢/household, it could both reduce its solid waste disposal costs, and improve the health of its citizens esp children.
some towns have done it to great effect.
day old chicks are cheep cheep enough for most anyone to afford, tho.
i'll let rahmie know y'all think it is a good idea, tho.
for those that like a slimy laugh-

(175,735 posts)I also learned that Oak Park has chickens, hadn't known that before.

(70,103 posts)even tho my first viewing of it was at the bar after the funeral of a young neighbor.
it came out great, tho. sometimes news people dont really pick up on you just right, but pam grimes was great. she was really into it all, and really got it.
funny how she picked out the part about chicken breeding plans. something only a true believer would have lit on, i think.
anyway, imma go write the mayor a letter about that chicken give away.

And sometimes I miss living in Illinois; my wife and I bought our first house there. The scenery and look of the neighborhoods brought that back.
