The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI never watch DWT"S" but tonight. Why don't they just declare the Maxim dude the emperor forever
and cancel this shit?!1 Yesterday all the media had that lady being swung on some kind of trapeze or whatever the round-and-around thing is called -- and that is NOT "dancing."
Just had to rant.

(50,130 posts)I guess that's why the media focused on her yesterday. She has been an inspiration to many people.
And the Olympian Meryl (who won tonight) has been an amazing amazing dancer. I guess you missed that part.

(10,952 posts)Maxim has hardly been treated as "emperor" of the show. That role has always shifted between Derek Hough and Mark Ballas. The judges have treated him pretty harsh over the years even when he has been given a really good star to work with. Maxim may be a tad volatile at time but he speaks his mind and never sugar coats his comments.
I do agree that Amy Purdy's freestyle was not much of what I would call dancing either. However, I do admire that she got as far as she did on the show. She worked hard to adapt her circumstances to the dances over the season.
I didn't watch this season as much as I went to youtube to watch the clips of only about 4 stars over the "season." As much as Meryl Davis was praised, the judges were a lot harsher on Charlie White. Unfortunately, the male pros seem to have more stronger choreographers then the female pros and the male pros seem to be better at showcasing their partners. The female pros don't get as much praise for their choreography as the male pros.

(6,399 posts)I have such a love/hate relationship with this show considering my own years in dancing. The whole spinning in air thing wasn't my thing, but that's why it was a freestyle element to just go and have fun as they get towards the end and showcase their personalities. But the show has never truly been about strong dancing in that sense but showmanship dancing and a whole lot of skill and celebrity.
I had a lot of fun with this season, and I largely watched initially because of Meryl and her Disney-Princess-like features and how much fun she and Charlie were during the olympics. I also really liked watching Drew Carey this season as he had a real sense of fun about him during it.
Maks, as noted in the many articles and stories, has been doing this for fourteen seasons and hasn't been paired with a winner until now. There's been ups and downs as to who makes it each year, but I was really glad that he got it this time and that it was with someone like Meryl who truly "got" him and his style.
So yes, excellent take-down of a show on your part that you said you never watch except for that one, spelling his name wrong and calling it all shit. Bravo!

(70,711 posts)I speak from total ignorance and personal preference since I have literally *never* watched *any* part of it, not only in the entirety of a show but not even one single performance routine, except over the years tiny clips that make it onto other shows for entertainment "news."
I *did* see clips of the Olympian with prosthetic limbs, tiny clips, and was properly amazed. But in the context of the show itself, my vague impressions are that it has been on the air for years, and has increased in intensity from the beginning of dancing to some kind of acrobatic contortion. And while the Olympian on the aerial loop was astounding, I myself just for myself would not even imagine this falling under the category of dancing.
That said, to each his own, every head is a world, or as Prince Phillip put it, "There's no accounting for taste." And I have merrily proceeded all those years it's been on without ever even knowing when it aired. I will admit, however, politics being everywhere for us DUers, that I was irritated to hear when Tom DeLAY and the PALIN people were featured, not that I saw them. So to those who referred me to the intricate relationships and treatment of the performers and the judges, this is no kind of discussion I could have. As for the (Russian?) dude, all I know is that he seems to have been in clips for years, which is what I meant by "declaring him emperor," meaning that at my level of no knowledge he seemed to have been the star of the show all these years.
And I don't want to give the impression that I am setting myself up as some kind of Defender of Real Dancing, since I would not sit through any kind of singing/dancing show at all, ever. But then, I have also never ever seen a single hospital show, lawyer show, police show, or actually hardly anything. I'll now step away from this topic until I step into my next mess!1
I defer and respect you fans. I retain my spouting off as valid for myself, just should have done it yelling to myself instead of throwing it out here.
On Edit: BtW/apropos of nothing, I think BERGERON(sp) is fantastic and have actually cited him a few times as being what we need in a candidate, along with SPRINGER, because of their COMMON TOUCH and personal charisma. He started as a street performer, much better than all our Yale lumps of candidates whups.

(15,222 posts)I was very happy that Max and Meryl won! They were definitely the best and deserved the trophy.
Amy Purdy is a champion in my book for even showing up. She amazed me.
Candace Cameron Bure in the finals? Seriously? She was awful. She was also a hypocrite IMHO because one of her first interviews had her commenting on how she was going to be all demure and wasn't going to wear anything skimpy or do provocative moves. Uh, yeah, right!
As soon as she got the taste of competition, all that "religious demureness" went right out the window!
