Millions of Bees Swarm, Close Del. Highway Ramp

s many as 20 million swarming bees released after a tractor-trailer hauling them overturned near Newark Tuesday have shut down a highway ramp and kept investigators from getting near the vehicle, said Delaware State Police, who urged drivers to stay away from the area.

The tractor-trailer fell on its side about 6:10 p.m. on a curve on a ramp from Route 896 to Interstate 95, said state police spokesman Sgt. Paul Shavack.

The rig, traveling from Florida to Maine, carried 460 crated hives, or an estimated 16 million to 20 million honeybees.

The driver and two passengers were able to get out of the vehicle, but were stung 50 to 100 times each, troopers said. They also suffered minor injuries in the crash and were taken to Christiana Hospital.

You know how they get rid of them - they don't gather them up but use a firehose and spray them so they disperse

I had no idea what was going on. Not going to campus that way tomorrow morning since they're not going to move the truck until they get all the bees/hives out. Hubby and I had to sing tonight so left the 21yr and 14yo to fend for themselves for dinner. They said they got a robocall saying people at risk with bee stings should stay inside away from the immediate area
until after the situation has been cleared.

They have 3 bee experts in there but they said the only option is to just let them disperse, so it will be interesting to see how 20 million bees is going to impact the area.

Stay safe down there!

It'll be interesting to see how those bees impact Delaware because they are all permamently becoming residents of our state.
