I luerve flip flops. Have had one surgery on "junk" (the podiatrist said) on the big toe. Now I'm seeing that the growth thing is happening on both big toes. Not a bunion (on the side). It's on the top.
What is it called (besides "junk" and I don't want to give up flip flops.

(68,644 posts)I don't get the junk, but I do get cracks at different parts of my feet that are really painful, and these happen more with sandals and flips than with shoes that allow less sliding around, like loafers.
I'm a loafer.
If the shoe fits, wear it!

(9,808 posts)They're little fluid filled cysts that grow in complex joints like the toe, wrist and ankles. They're benign, except for the pain they cause. And yes, among the many, many, many other reasons flip-flops are awful, they will encourage ganglion cysts in the big toe.
They also kill ankles deader than gopher holes, make arches fall and make people fall down go boom. Post-tibial tendonitis and plantar fasciitis are seriously no fun at all. And they're noisy. (The shower shoes, not the diseases.)
Get someone to take a picture of your knees, calves and ankles from behind and from a straight-on angle. Hold a ruler to draw a straight line from center of knees through center of calves to center of ankles. If you can still do it, great! In 5 years, you probably won't be able to -- your ankles will be bowed inwards. That's pronation, and it's what sends the kids of podiatrists to expensive colleges. Once it starts, it's hard to fix without several months in a boot or years of orthotics and orthopedic shoes. (Those damn boots are hot, orthotics are uncomfortable, and the shoes are heavy.)
Try Tevas. Still ugly, but just as airy, less likely to trip and kill you, and in twenty years, you won't have pronated ankles and broken arches.

Thwick-thwack, thwick-thwack, thwick-thwack, thwick-thwack, thwick-thwack, thwick-thwack...
Sorry, but I'd turn down Scarlett Johanssen and Alexis Denisoff in floppies. They just take all the slink right out.

(41,960 posts)They have enough of an arch, are classy enough to wear to work and last forever.

(112,150 posts)I kept on slipping and nearly falling in car washes.
I'm diabetic and this past winter one callous on the sole of my foot cracked and was bleeding. I'm thankful that I wear socks nearly all the time now.

(10,893 posts)I wore flip-flops was when I was either 4 or 5 years old. It's not that my feet are ugly; it's just that flip-flops were never my style. I think they look cheap in comparison to regular sneakers, and I also think that open-toed shoes look better on women than they do on men.
