Automatic conversion of domestic partnership into marriage? Fuck them. Go to Niagara Falls anyway.

After 8 years with my (then-) girlfriend, my brother called me up and invited me to be best man at his wedding. I said sure, and would call my girlfriend in Germany to see if she could come to America for the occasion, too. My brother commented that if we would both be there, we might as well make it a double wedding. I was OK with that, but I was only half the equation. I called up my girlfriend and relayed my brother's suggestion. Her answer was the German version of "sure, works for me." Not the most romantic of proposals (or acceptances), but that was in 1981 and we're still together, so I guess the movie scene is not an absolute requirement.

23 years notwithstanding, shouldn't you be somewhere else right now?

Oh, BTW, congrats!

Good on Washington State to give you the same sense of permanence and stability in your loving relationship that most of us have had for so many years, and which you so richly deserve.

Traveling to DC next week for my brothers celebration. They got the legal stuff done as soon as it was passed last fall. Now family and friends are getting together for probably the most formal event I'll ever attend. Looking forward to it.
