(15,676 posts)Hold your breath in, for as long as possible. When you need to exhale, do it as slowly as possible, through your mouth. Exhale as fully as you can. Stay as relaxed as possible as you do this.
Repeat if necessary. It's all a matter of controlling your breathing for a few moments.

(3,065 posts)It helps expand the ribcage and gives you more air. The idea is to stretch your diaphragm.
Works like a charm for me.

(15,676 posts)I've never tried it with my arms up, but it makes sense. Next time I'll give it a go.
cui bono
(19,926 posts)That works in real life. It worked over the phone once too. It disrupts your neurological something or other since you were not expecting someone to say that and they go away. That's what I was told and I tried it on a stranger in the drugstore and it worked and did it to a colleague over the phone and it worked then too.

(26,326 posts)Charles Osborne (December 14, 1892[1] May 1, 1991) hiccupped continuously for 68 years (19221990). Osborne was from Anthon, Iowa, U.S., and he was entered in Guinness World Records as the man with the Longest Attack of Hiccups.[2] His condition also led him to be a guest on the New York radio show Ripley's Believe It or Not![citation needed] in 1936, ABC's That's Incredible![citation needed] in 1980, and The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson[citation needed] in 1983. He appeared in an article by Dear Abby,[citation needed] was drawn as a comic for a Bazooka Joe bubble gum wrapper, is listed as a trivia question on the iPod Touch and was featured as a question in the board game Trivial Pursuit.[citation needed]
Osborne began hiccuping in 1922, after a 350-pound hog collapsed on top of him while he was preparing to slaughter it. The hiccups persisted for 68 years, about one hic every 10 seconds. It is speculated that either an abdomen muscle was pulled or a blood vessel in the brain burst and destroyed the part of the brain stem that inhibits hiccups.[3] Operations were attempted to stop the hiccups, but proved unsuccessful.[citation needed] Hormone therapy stopped the hiccups for 36 hours, but was stopped due to other health problems.[3]

(36,423 posts)It's very hard to do but it helps the diaphragm relax. Repeat if necessary, but chances are you won't have to.

(1,975 posts)Went to medical and told them about it and I ended up getting a shot in the diaphragm. The shot hurt like hell, but it stopped the hiccups. They said I had some weird spasm in my diaphragm that was causing it.
Worst 3 days of my life, any time I get the hiccups I immediately panic and hope they stop soon.
