Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsPost here: Favorite Movie Soundtracks
I have a bunch of movie Soundtracks in my collection. For some movies, they just happened to have a group of already released songs that I really like and others they are just amazing arrangements.
Probably my favorite two soundtracks of all original music - Hans Zimmer's soundtrack for "Inception" and Ennio Morricone's soundtrack for "The Mission"
As for favorite Soundtrack of previous released music used for a Movie the best would be one of the bestselling ones out there which is the Soundtrack from 'The Big Chill' which included a string of great hits from Motown. Another favorite is the one from 'Velvet Underground' that includes a mixture of original songs along with some favorites from the era of Glam Rock.
But like I said, I have a ton of soundtracks like this including ones from the following movies: Adventureland, American Hustle, Boogie Nights, Dazed and Confused, Empire Records, Fantastic Mr Fox, Grosse Pointe Blank, Heavy Metal, Magnolia, Marie Antoinette, Moulin Rouge, Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Romeo & Juliet, Saturday Night Fever, Sex and the City movie, Sliver (crappy movie great soundtrack), Fahrenheight 9/11, City of Angels, Take me Home Tonight.

I love movie sound tracks--the escapist qualities-- and am sure I could include dozens more, but these come to mind.

(21,925 posts)The Big Country by Jerome Moross and the entire soundtrack of El Cid composed like a piece of classical music (by a classical music composer) the greatest of the soundtrack composers, Miklos Rosza (El Cid, Ben Hur, Quo Vadis, King Of Kings, The Thief of Baghdad, The Asphalt Jungle, Double Indemnity, Spellbound, The Killers, The Golden Voyage Of Sinbad, 63 major feature film scores in all, of which he received 13 separate Academy Award nominations and three Oscars).
Edit to add the soundtrack of the film The Ninth Gate which I think was truly, truly special and added so much to set the mood of the film, by another classical composer, Wojciech Kilar.

(11,833 posts)all Morricone for that matter, all Bernard Herrman (Hitchock stuff), Bird (Charlie Parker baby!), the Johnny Greenwood of Radiohead soundtrack of There Be Blood, the Hepburn movie that has Moon River in it, all of Tarantino's movies, The Harder They Come (one of the best reggae compilations ever), The Exorcist (Tubular Bells), anything Duke Ellington did, all Jim Jarmusch movies, all Sofia Coppola movies, Rock N Roll High School, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence and everything by that composer, all Wim Wenders movies. Many more.
Interestingly, I can't stand that composer who works with Spielberg. He's a big shot & big name. But I think most of his music is grandiose and overwhelms the movies.

cemaphonic
(4,138 posts)I've seen it in a couple lists already, but that doesn't do it justice. Imitated in countless movies, tv shows and video games that seek to evoke the open, lonely feel of the American West.
A good one I haven't seen mentioned yet is Carter Burwell's score for "Miller's Crossing," built upon some traditional Irish tunes:
And yeah, Morricone is pretty much the greatest movie composer ever. I like "The Mission," "Battle of Algiers" and especially "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly," for its crazy blend of Romantic era orchestral music and 60s surf rock.

(4,138 posts)So many film composers do their twist on 19th century classical music, and it's the same stuff from film to film, but there's no way that you would confuse the "Raising Arizona" score with "Fargo." Even the soundtrack dominated movies like "The Big Lebowski" and "O Brother, Where Art Thou" has some nice incidental music that fits the movie perfectly.
