NeeeeBraska, where the wind comes sweepin' down the plain
And the right-wing nuts can sure smell stink
When the wind comes right behind the rain.
Neeeeraska, Ev'ry night my honey lamb and I
Sit alone and talk and watch a hawk
Makin' crazy circles in the sky.

We know we belong to the land
And the land we belong to is Bland!
And when we say
Yeeow! Ayipioeeay!
We're only sayin'
You're doin' fine, Nebraska!
Nebraska, you're Insane.

There is only one real Rockville, the others are pathetic pretenders.

The song was written by Mike Mills (credited to Berry/Buck/Mills/Stipe) as a plea to his then girlfriend, Ingrid Schorr, not to return to Rockville, Maryland,[3] where her parents lived.[4] Schorr, who later became a journalist, has written about her amusement with the factual inaccuracies about her relationship with Mills and the background of the song that often appear in books about the band.[4] Peter Buck has stated that the song was originally performed in a punk/thrash style, and that it was recorded for this single in its now more-familiar country-inspired arrangement as a joke aimed at R.E.M. manager Bertis Downs.[5]
