Another update: at long last she tok a treat...a little grain from my hand. Immediately walked away. Doesn't want to give me any ideas, lol!
Ok, the first nose sniff that I've seen. Until this morning I haven't seen Maizie get closer than about 4 feet from Dahli, when they were eating hay in the doorway. She usually keeps more distance than that, at least when I'm watching.
This morning, they both greeted me at the gate, Dahli up front to get skritched and Maizie just behind --and almost bumping into her -- to say hi from a safe distance.
At some point while I was doing chores I stopped to give Dahli some carrot. Maizie again let me touch her nose with a carrot. She sniffed it and declined the offer. Then I offered her a cookie, which she also declined. But then she sniffed noses with Dahli! They're becoming friends.
Later I will try hand feeding a little grain. It's a last resort -- I don't like hand-feeding grain -- but it may be the only thing she accepts. I need to find something to use as an extra reward. Although maybe just skritching will do it some day...
I realized this morning that she is essentially a 7 1/2 year old weanling. Until the breeder I got her from brought her home, she had never been away from her farm or herd. but that breeder brought her home with her friend from the herd.
Now she is away from everyone and every place she has ever known.
My camera is charging now. Pics to come later
