Panic and existential dread

The things that happen to me in the middle of the night when I can't sleep. I'm thinking about the move ahead, about how much I will have to pay in rent at the new place, the thought of all that money, for deposits, moving expenses, etc., before I see a single paycheck. I will be paying rent at two places because the place I am living now requires a 60 notice to vacate. No other fees, though, to break the lease.

My boyfriend has had to talk me off the ledge more than once already. I'm in full-bore panic mode tonight. I think this is what David Foster Wallace called the "howling fantods". If it isn't the precise definition, I don't care, I like the phrase.

Tomorrow I will inform my colleagues that I am leaving. Nervous about that too, although I don't know why; I've never really fit in here.

FWIW, millions of us have been through similar moves, its part of life in the 21st century and was in the last too, and we survive; it's what we do. I hope you've given 'notice' at your current place.

IF it would help, my cottage is 55 miles from Annapolis in southern MD, Calvert County, so you might use it as a temporary stopping off point as you decide what to do.

And it's not as if I haven't moved before, either.

Not sure why I'm so panicked. Some combination of sticker shock and just anxiety over change.

Thanks for the offer, but I *hope* to find something when I go up this weekend. Worse comes to worst, I can stay with my boyfriend in Reston. Not that I want that commute, but for a few days it would be okay.

"It could always be worse."

Which is actually true. And everything always seems worse in the middle of the night. I never seem to remember that either.

is not to worry.

But as the old saying goes: If you worry about something that hasn't happened yet, you have to suffer through it twice.

Best of luck!

I'm sure whoever said The coward dies a thousand deaths, the brave man dies but once, was an anxiety freak like me. How else would he know.

Right now, your brain is out of control, and the more you think about the 'unknowns' of the future, the worse it gets, especially when you're trying to sleep.

Meditation works for me; when you focus on your breathing, your brain can't stay stuck in the worry cycle and lets you relax.

I have this weird compulsion not to disappoint anyone, even if I'll probably never see them again.

I do my very best worrying late at night so I can relate. But hang in there; the shitty stuff is always temporary.

One that is maybe just a tad higher than I would like to pay, but only 4 miles from work and within walking distance of the bay. So I'm going to see it on Saturday.

As with everything else, I'm a dabbler not an in depth specialist, so about philosophies I take a tidbit from here and from there. So from Buddhism, putting suffering in its place; from Taoism, sit by the river/your enemies (eventually) float by; from Shinto, everything's (animate or inanimate) got a spirit/essence. Etc.

Yes, even from TomCRUISEism, clear the mind of negatives/guilts.

Yeah, it's easier said than done for anybody, and probably as often as not I give into the ugly thoughts.

Anyway, the things you've named are not trivial, but neither all powerful. And DU-Lounge helps with everything. Open 24/7.

Pour yourself a large Scotch.
4. Sip it slowly. Reflect.
5. Repeat step 3.
6. Repeat step 4.

Now...
Don't you feel better?
I know I do.
