(70 posts)I dunno. The older bands are great, but it's just not the same. Especially with different members, different voices/sounds etc. I'll listen to a stream though!

(528 posts)The grateful dead has had different members 6 times over the course of their history and ever time the sound was different. Trey isn't Jerry but he is an amazing guitar player. The sound is different but the love and magic is still the same.

(100,102 posts)Trey is awesome and can definitely jam with the best of them. I have no doubt he'll make a great Jerry.

(70 posts)Yeah I was thinking that a replacement can be appreciated for his different style. I've seen Chicago (among other bands), and they are a band that has changed a lot.

(18,837 posts)...better than I expected. The surviving musicians have the right to say goodbye. Not the Dead, just the guys who survived saying goodbye with Chementi and Hornsby and Anastasio.
I've been observing the 50th in my own way, listening to a lot of Dead, when they were the Dead...when Jerry was on board.
I've never been a fan of "The Brent Years" because I never really cared for his voice...at the time, I thought of him as a poor man's Michael McDonald. I also failed to appreciate his overly brittle synth sound on much of his playing. But most of all, it killed me to hear the deterioration of Jerry's voice.
But in order to be a well-rounded fan of the band on their 50th, I did make a Brent era mix CD, and the performance of "Stella Blue" from "Dozin' At The Nick" made it on the list. Jerry's voice isn't at its best but somehow the "ragged glory" really fits:
