The 1970s. Forty years ago, to be exact. I had just met my wife-to-be a year before, and was still playing Russian music for fun with Dr. Zhivago (a friend whose resemblance was more than passing to the film figure portrayed by Omar Sharif). My wife just dug these photos up from somewhere:
Hanover, NH, 1975:

We're still together.

My friend departed this world some 25 years ago.
DAYYAM were we young and innocent back then!!!

(54,369 posts)It ain't the years, my friend. It's the mileage.
My wife cheats, of course. She doesn't look much different. It all landed on my shoulders.

Once upon a time all votes were counted
No computer glitches to report
And no legal challenges were mounted
Voters chose, and not the Supreme Court
Chorus:
Those were the days, my friend
We want them back again
One man one vote was watchword of the day.
If only voters choose, the winner would not lose,
Those were the days, oh, yes those were the days.
Once they needed Thomas and Scalia,
Had them stop the recount halfway through,
But now theres this new high tech idea:
Have machines turn votes to red from blue!
Chorus:
Those were the days, my friend
We thought theyd never end
One man one vote was watchword of the day.
If only voters choose, the winner would not lose,
Those were the days, oh, yes those were the days.
Once it was like being a craps shooter,
Never knowing who the winnerd be
Now its all decided by computer
Programmed by your friendly G O P!
Final chorus:
Those were the days, my friend
We thought theyd never end
One man one vote was watchword of the day.
Good old democracy, not crazed theocracy,
And color screens were just for Pac-Man play!

(25,816 posts)Congrats on the 40 years. That's over three times all three of my marriages put together.
Oh yeah, quit showing off the fine guitars.

(54,369 posts)The pic with "Zhivago" had to have been from 1977, as I hadn't met Boo until then.
As far as marriages go, I can't comment on that. I had the luck to meet "THE" one at age 22. I realize not all do. I got my heartbreaks out of the way early AND lucked out AND she is nearsighted.

Now another generation gets to change it just as profoundly in the next step.
Big revolutions are always multi-generational.

(54,369 posts)Got rid of Nixon, the Portuguese military junta and the Greek military junta. Much happening back then!
Things are in flux again, I agree. Or, maybe "still." There are many chapters yet to be written.

(54,369 posts)We're both at least partially of Russian background, so maybe it was in the DNA. We had met at the college balalaika orchestra, which was (I think) the only such college-sponsored orchestra in the USA at the time. We went up to NYC to get new shirts ("rubazhki" when the old ones got torn. The neighborhood must have been fairly solidly Slavic because all the shop signs were in Ukrainian or Russian in those days. We could read them, of course, but casual passers by probably wondered if their eyesight needed checking.
