there wasn't enough of it to make a comparison, and their range was narrow by comparison.

There are many individual performances that can rise to the level of the Beatles, but no one in rock can match their sustained output, even bands that have stayed together much longer than the Beatles. Miles Davis can match (or exceed) them in range, but he's jazz, after all.

There are many groups that have had 1, 2, 5 or 10 great songs, or maybe 1, 2 or 3 great albums. But, the Beatles just had so much high quality music in such a short time.

Of course, my opinion could be colored by the fact that I was bitten by the Beatles at the tender age of nine. I was so "loyal" to them I wanted nothing to do with all the other copycat/wannabe "Brit invasion" bands -- especially those scruffy-looking Rolling Stones! Fortunately, my musical tolerances and tastes matured along with me, and found that I wasn't hurting The Beatles by liking the Kinks, Syndicate of Sound, Herman's Hermits, The Moody Blues, and especially Deep Purple.
