My dog does respond to videos from time to time. I can't be certain that he really understands what he's seeing, but he does look interested in the monitor at times.

As for hearing.... I say absolutely yes. Jake the cocker spaniel used to respond to the Domino's commercials. He'd hear the doorbell on the commercial and start barking. Soon... when the commercial started and the music began - well before the doorbell... he'd start barking.

Any time a doorbell rings, or a knock of any kind happens on a video, either television or computer, my dogs absolutely respond to the sounds.

I used to have a friend hold the phone to my cat's ear when I was out of town. She always responded.

That watched TV. She liked Animal Planet. Her other dogs didn't watch. She said some dogs are Sight Hounds (Doberman/Rottweiler mix) and some are Scent Hounds (Beagles). Minnie would even go so far as to bark to get us to turn on the TV. If we were watching a talk show she would go into the other room stand in front of the TV and bark for Linda to turn on Animal Planet.
