Escargots was "invented" in the French district of Burgundy because the corrupt leadership was taking everything that even looked like meat away from the peasants. WHY they did this I haven't discovered; they were either trying to starve out the peasants, holding grand feasts, or selling it all to foreign interests. Or all three at the same time; that works too. Anyway, the peasants didn't like the idea of starving to death and started eating anything that appeared even remotely edible.

Frog legs were discovered the same way.
