But I can't stand their propensity to go waaaaaayyyy overboard. I think you can do an impressive movie, without having scenes like the Matrix, or people bouncing from treetop to treetop.

I don't need someone flying from roof-top to roof-top, for instance, though I enjoy those runners who do entirely possible things, I forget what they call them, but they climb walls, make incredible jumps, and it is all entirely possible. I just wish they stayed a little more in the realm of reality.

I don't think this movie, and ones like it, are meant to impress you with special effects. They are just beautiful to watch. At least they work for me, but tastes vary.

A lot of magical swords out there. I liked reading the series Fred Books of the Swords by Fred Saberhagen. But take a look at the list at Wikipedia - really a lot out there to cut yourself on--

Either Hollywood is piss-poor at making them, or...the audience is fickle and won't like anything. Its amazing anything gets an academy award, with so many dissatisfied customers. Maybe too many people have been playing computer games where a character's destiny is determined by the player, or its all been made before in previous years. How has StarWars survived? Maybe more people like it than don't or they been waiting so long, that they don't care about character plots, just wanting to see their heroes again.

Maybe they are impressed by Anime plots, and unique scripts coming from other countries. American Hollywood has re-hashed so many of the same movies over and over again. How many Spiderman movies? How many Superman movies? How many Batman films? Eventually people get tired of the same character popping up over and over and over again, so when a good film finally gets released, and people go to see it, they walk out of the theater unsatisfied and bitch about the film and how they would have made it. They will say this film is garbage, and that film is garbage, and eventually figure out, they have been wasting their money on nothing but crap.

In away they are right. Awesome trailers come out and when you go to see the film, you find most of the good stuff was in the editing of the trailer. You see enough trailers, and learn that's the best you will get. "It all sucks".

Hollywood is a close knit community. Only the so called top of the top writers and directors are there and eventually, they run out of decent material to use. Writing something new and unique gets tossed in the round file pretty quickly. There is no place for new talent there, not until someone dies off, and even then someone has to have superior proven skills to make it and then be accepted!

Why are some of the best films, foreign films? Because they don't have a "Hollywood" and guilds shouting down a story or character. People who are not afraid to dream of a good story be it from fantasy or history will back it with cash, and the film will entertain people in that country. It might even come to the United States and be buried in some back lot alley Theaters where its shown for a mere two dollars and fifty cents. While the film maybe a cult classic in Singapore, it gets no recognition until some big wig writer happens to accidentally see them, and maybe than he or she might be impressed enough to see it... and the critics like it because its "Refreshing" and "New" and yeah maybe it will snag a few academy awards.

Americans like to put their noses in the air when it comes to the Motion Picture business, after all we invented the medium. There maybe a million reasons why some films make it and most films don't. We have all heard the story about how some arrogant director or producer passed on a film, because there wasn't enough sex or violence in the film, only for it to reemerge later
snagging huge acclaim.

I am not saying Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is one of these films. I am saying there are too many people who have seen too many films and lump them all together as "Everything is Crap, these days." Everything may seem like crap, but once in awhile, you find a gem hidden among the so called garbage. Those memorable scenes brilliantly done by an actor that makes it all the more incredible.

If we have such great taste, look who the Republicans have put up as the possible leader of our nation, and ask yourself, do we really have superior taste???

Most of the action scenes for this movie were at night and my night vision isn't what it used to be.

I didn't notice a major peeve of mine with movies and TV shows in this movie but many movies have the "background" music so loud that I can't hear the dialog which now also seems to depend on people whispering all the time. I have a moderate hearing loss in the human voice range which lets the background music overpower the voices.

I have not lost my liking of movies and even took a course on movie appreciation in college a few years ago.
