Why I love etymology: Kerberos

http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=Cerberus

Kerberos was the Hound of Hell who guarded the paths of the dead for Hades.

The etymology of the beast's name is uncertain, but comparative philology with Sanskrit suggests it comes from a root meaning "speckled".

Hades, guardian of Hell and warden of the dead, named his dog "Spot".
