Every time we eat, our pets are on alert. Most of them try to be semi-sneaky about it ... except for one cat, who has absolutely no shame.
Every time her owners sit down to eat, she's there just watching and waiting.
Always there...

(7,473 posts)She was an abused stray who found us and never left. She had many health problems but she was sweet and funny. Each day when I prepared dinner, she would sit on a kitchen chair and watch. When I called my husband for dinner, she would sit and wait to see what might be coming her way.
We would give her a few cut-up pieces of our dinner, she would go away content.
This kitty was special. She had many medical problems resulting from the abuse she suffered but we managed to keep her with us for 14 years. No harm done with a tiny bit of 'people' food once a day. Made her happy and made us smile.
I have a new (shelter) kitty now who could care less about people food. She does, however, remind me at about 8PM or so that she wants to go to bed. Too early for me but she sits by me and cries, letting me know the time is near.
Cats are amazing. They can be demanding but they love you unconditionally.

(50,130 posts)She starts about half an hour before the late news comes on, and fusses and fusses until I turn down the bed, plump the pillows, and so on. When the lights go out, she is on her favorite chair with a fleecy throw. But by the middle of the night, she is curled against the small of my back. Sweet, except it makes me too warm at times.

(115,686 posts)That's a very intense stare. Sometimes I think cats could light fires with their stares.

(16,296 posts)A somewhat cringy tale - a small black snake somehow got into the garage where we kept the kitty litter. The cat saw the snake ooze out of the car front and , of course, chased it and cornered it. We got a broom and shooed it out into the yard where it slithered away. But that cat would , for years, go to the litter box and stand in front of the car for hours waiting for another snake to appear.

(9,904 posts)two have passed. One of those did the same as the cat in the photos. Just stare. Unless we were having chicken, then she became vocal until she got some.
Of the two we have now, one will vocalize until she is offered some, or you can provide a closer inspection so she can smell. Vocalizes more if she wants some, or just walks away if she does not.

(2,472 posts)pay attention to people food, but the dogs sure do. Last night I learned that my dogs think that if I yell "shit!" it means I dropped something they can eat. I had washed dishes after making a baby shower cake and I had the tips from the icing bags in a bowl to dry. Later I picked it up and as I did, they went all over the counter and I said "shit!" Those goofy dogs came running at full speed and looked for food on the floor. They were very disappointed to find out that there wasn't any.

(11,085 posts)He soon trained my wife to give him a sample. If it was food he didn't like, he would shake a paw at it and walk away. If he really liked it, he would tap her on the shoulder again to ask for more. We should have named him Oliver.

(3,919 posts)and are hungry because they can no longer chew their kibble. they are hungry.
vets recommend feeding older cats wet (pate not chunky) and dry food in separate bowls. it's easier for them to eat the pate and the kibble keeps their gums tough - even though they are unable to break it up.

(1,579 posts)and left to fend for herself. She was living in a culvert when my friend discovered her. She weighed less than 5 pounds. I could not get her to eat much which had me stymied. I tried everything. I stumbled on the pate on one plate, and kibble in a bowl routine. It was the right combination for her. She's doing well now -- weighs around 11 pounds and is healthy per her vet. Her teeth appear to be okay. But she is an older girl -- maybe this is easier for her to eat at this stage of her life.

(3,919 posts)it took me awhile to understand what was going on with my kitty because she has always been so independent. i guess i wasn't wanting to face the truth that she was 16 yrs - at the time. she's 18, now...going to miss my little 'mommy' - she is the sweetest joy.

(3,919 posts)and i like to think they never forget us...sometimes, i feel my kitty from years ago snuggling up to me on my pillow. she was the only one i allowed to do so because she was an abandoned kitten when i rescued her - many, many kitties ago.

(115,686 posts)She looks well-fed and is obviously loved. She's just doing one of those weird cat things that they do - probably trying to tell the humans by telepathy that she'd like some of their food. But she probably has plenty of cat food of her own.

(5,734 posts)I want to eat at THEIR house! The food looks terrific! I would even sit in the cat's chair and hold her on my lap while I ate.
Sigh.

(18,470 posts)Sit on s chair and watch the humans eat. We had to be careful because she would reach up and grab food given a chance.
My sister in law's cat TK also likes watching humans eating and trying to grab her own bite of human food.

(1,245 posts)Both my cats have been very similar looking to that one. My first was a Lynx Point Siamese, and my current is either Snowshoe or maybe 1/2 snowshoe and 1/2 blue or lynx point. He has the same white paws as the baby in the pics but his overall markings are much more subtle, he mainly looks like a blue point with some faint lynx-like markings. Guessing the cat in the picks is a snowshoe or lynx/snowshoe mix ... but I'm nearly positive it's of the general 'Siamese' family ... the bestest brand of kittehs evah!
