I live a few miles out of town, first (occupied) house down the road from the highway. Room mate and her guests saw a couple guys run through the yard, so I went out with the dog to investigate. An SUV was off the road nosed into a phone pole at the intersection, with the driver slumped over the wheel, and about three or four people standing around a pick-up that looked fine, like they just pulled up and got out themselves.
First cop showed up then, interviewed the driver (he seemed okay, no airbag, that I could see) and the other people. A couple emergency vehicles rolled up and several more LEO's. I finally got one's attention and reported that two guys took off across the field. They rolled up to our driveway as I got back, jumped out and grabbed rifles, told me to go inside and lock the doors. I told them the outbuildings are all open, and, here I am!
So they caught three guys, but I don't know where. Probably pretty close, because it didn't take very long, and the hay field out back doesn't offer much cover. I took the photo a few minutes ago, after they left the yard, with their dog. They actually slowed down as they rolled past, and thanked me, which was nice.
Exciting times out here in the hay fields!

(17,086 posts)We're just renting from the hay farm, who bought the house for it's irrigation shares. Lots of gunfire from prairie dog shooting sometimes, but other than that, tranquil. Well, usually.

(16,377 posts)a couple of days ago we noticed a helicopter flying around and shortly after I got a call from a BP agent wanting to know if it was OK to come in our main road. they were after "drug smugglers" that had bailed out of a vehicle. I told him I don't like you guys on the property but my understanding was I couldn't stop an active pursuit, just please stay on the road or get out of your vehicles since that would be more effective anyway.
couple hours later two Mexican guys showed up on foot wanting to use the phone and some water. I was too paranoid to let them use the phone but gave them some water and food and sent them on their way.
I probably would have given them a ride most of the way to town, but that call was kind of strange - BP has never done that before.
my little juvenile criminal heart was sort of half glad that people can still get away from the cops occasionally.
the upstanding citizen in me felt a little guilty, I would probably help the sheriff's office but but fuck the border patrol.

(17,086 posts)We aren't as isolated as it sounds you are, but nothing much happens around here, either. Mostly surrounded by hay farmers watching the grass grow, shooting prairie dogs, and reading their Fundy bs. I think all three of the "perps" were from the Ute reservation, which almost surrounds us as well. If I had to bet, I'd guess they jacked the SUV in town. Not much else of a reason for the passengers to take off, that I can think of. The police weren't in hot pursuit, so they could have stashed any contraband in the bushes, if they were carrying. Of course,it would have to be meth or something worse, since the cops do not care about weed. I could have sparked one in the yard and they would have ignored it.
They never asked permission to enter the property, but I guess it was pretty well implied when I told them which way the "bad guys" went. I wasn't inclined to argue any fine points of law once they drew their weapons, anyways. I was feeling distinctly outgunned, and took the dog in the house.
